Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 07-13-2009 I just read the first trade of The Walking Dead. Holy shit. Re: Comic Book Thread - Blues - 07-13-2009 Oh yeah I forgot to mention that here. On that note, let me go see if they've made it past 60 yet. New Deadpool kicks ass. For those of you who haven't read the like other 6 series, go fucking do it assholes. Be prepared to bite it on occasion, the humor ranges from (generally) pretty witty and over the top to the (fortunately only occasionally) LOLRANDUMCHIMICHANGA shit based on who's writing at the time. Worth the read though, Cable & Deadpool was a GREAT fucking run for anyone who likes both of them. Re: Comic Book Thread - Blues - 07-13-2009 Do yourselves a favor and stay at whatever arc ends around 40-50, the new one is slow as fuck so far and waiting a month for one comic sucks dick. When I read Deadpool I actually laugh aloud and often find myself in hysterics. That's awesome. Ever. ...Even better than Ash from Evil Dead shooting zombie Marvel characters. Re: Comic Book Thread - Blues - 07-15-2009 Finished Y. Going to pick up Preacher and Transmetropoliltan next, as soon as I go through 20 some volumes of motherfucking Pokemon Special. Y: THE LAST MAN SPOILER ALERT: For such an optomistic title the ending sure was.... depressing. Not only that it just felt really rushed, but it started to feel that way probably about halfway through the series to me, like it was just picking up speed but a bit too fast for the pacing it needed. Fucking seriously though, 50 odd issues trying to find the girl he loves and then they end it in a couple pages? I mean anyone with some brains could figure out she was going to dump him in the beginning, and as soon as he brought it up again you could tell something was going to happen, but not ending the relationship that drove the fucking series. A happy romantic ending wasn't necessary, but to end it like that was just bad taste imo. They should have done a little more building between Yorick and 355 if they wanted to push that ship on the readers, especially with her flat out stating that surviving a lot of shit with someone doesn't mean it's love, etc. etc. The going on about how losing 355 broke him was retarded too, if that was the case why show compassion after 5 years and not just snap and shoot the bitch in the face? Dunno, just didn't like it, great series nonetheless but I think the ending could have been handled a little differently and turned out better. AND THEN GERMS KILLED THE MARSHUNS Re: Comic Book Thread - Ianki - 07-15-2009 (07-15-2009, 04:01 AM)Pokemon Trainer Blues link Wrote: Finished Y. Just never ever ever ever read Scalped. That shit is awful. Re: Comic Book Thread - Blues - 07-15-2009 100 Bullets sounds awesome. Dling it now, going to read it after/with Pokemons. Re: Comic Book Thread - Ianki - 07-16-2009 after reading the newest Criminal trade (which is AWESOME by the way), i got on an Ed Brubaker fix. i just read the first four issues of Incognito (of five, the fifth to be released this month?), and it is far and out the best mini-series i have ever read. Mixing everything that is great about criminal and adding in weird super-power shit, but a shit ton of old time pulpy goodness. Everyone should give this a look (no trade yet, but it is most definitely on demonoid for those who wish to do evil things on the internet). Downloading Sleeper right now, which is eb brubaker and the same artist from criminal and incognito. hoping for the best. Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 07-16-2009 Ianki it sounds like you would like Gotham Central. It's about the police force inside Gotham City. They have no super powers or anything but they have to do with all the super villians. IT is really good. They had this one arc in particular, I think it won some awards. Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 07-17-2009 Super mega list of my current favs for those who don't like reading back in the thread: Local Good stand alone indie comic by two of my favorite people in the comic industry. Basically a coming of age, hazards of youth story. Think Reality Bites but for our generation and centering around a run-away. Lucifer I will probably beat this comic like a dead horse because I think it is my current favorite series of everyone I've read. It really helps if you've read sandman to get a grasp on the characters in the beginning but it is not necessary. This comic follows the devil from The Sandman series as he gets dragged out of retirement and eventually has to deal with Armageddon complete with Fenrir. It follows the same idea as The Sandman but focusing on christian mythology instead. Also it really isn't as blasphemous as it sounds. Lucifer is based on the description from Milton's Paradise Lost though so no horns or other stuff. DMZ Basically takes what they are going through in the middle east and transplants it to the states. It is very well written and deals with a lot of current events type stuff. What draws me to it is it deals with the people in the FUBAR situations and shows how mixed up morality can get when stuff is crazy. It becomes really hard to judge people when you see the story presented through their eyes - whether it is the marine that gets off on killing people or it is the chick talked into blowing herself up. Northlanders The viking comic to end all viking comics. It is surprisingly well researched and seems to get the culture dead on. Oh and did I mention that there is a lot of violence and people being total bad-asses? Well it's a comic about fucking vikings what did you expect ponies? Gotham Central An amazing comic about what it is like to be a cop in a city filled with super villians. Best arcs are one where a female police officer gets outed by two face and has to deal with anti-gay sentiment both within her department and from the public, and an arc where the joker decides to start picking off people with a sniper rifle because he is bored. The Walking Dead Not your basic zombie survival story for one reason - it keeps going. The author was always disappointed when zombie movies ended because he always wanted to know what happens next. So he made a comic where you can find out. The goal is to follow the characters for as long as possible to see how they would make their life in a world full of zombies. House of Mysteries Really good comic that is mostly a comic book equivalent of the campfire story. This house traps people because it needs stories to survive, so they have to tell stories to pay for their room and board. It follows a group of people that are the house's prisoners as they try to learn about the house and why they are trapped. It follows the cain and abel canon from other vertigo comics. Fables and Jack of Fables Also including the spin off Jack of Fables. Follows the story of characters from fables as they try and make their living in our world. The characters and story are solid but I can't say too much without giving anything away. Read Jack for lighter stories and Fables for more epic tales. I Kill Giants If you can read this without crying at the end you are dead inside. I almost cried which is saying a lot for me. I don't want to say anything more because I don't want to deprive you of anything but it is an incredible story of a girl who kills giants.....maybe. Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 07-17-2009 I may post some more later.... Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 07-24-2009 Saving this list for later ;D http://www.comicsalliance.com/2009/06/24/the-best-dirty-comics-by-great-artists/ Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 07-31-2009 Dave if you don't start reading Northlanders I swear I'll fly over there. Just saw a cover of issue #20 and holy shit they are doing another Sven story!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Comic Book Thread - Greatbacon - 07-31-2009 Wow, all of those look absolutely amazing, surf. I need to look into almost all of those, as soon as I get some cash, especially Lucifer (I always did enjoy the bits of Sandman that dealt with hell). Also 5 post combo breaker. Re: Comic Book Thread - Surf314 - 08-05-2009 Second Northlanders story is pretty brutal. Remind me never to piss off the Irish. Re: Comic Book Thread - Vongore - 08-05-2009 My gf just bought Batman: Mad Love. It's an oldie, but one of the greatest Batman comics i've ever read. It's all about Harley Quinn and her love for The Joker and it was made by the same guys who made "The Animated Series" |
