Re: Valve speaks - Badgerman of DOOM - 09-03-2009

I have noticed that the halo has been causing a rift. I sense Valve could have dealt with this better.\
To do this, they should have let the idlers keep their crap, but issue their warning. Retroactive punishment is incredibly unfair, and that is basically what they did. Then, they should have given all the smugfags their halo. Both parties would be happy, and this wouldn't be nearly as dramatic.

Who actually wears the halo though?

Well...it might provide lulz if you kill someone when you are a spy since apparently it gives you away when you are cloaked

It seems that the most vocal of the smugfags are wearing it.
Which is to say 90% or something.

Re: Valve speaks - Honest - 09-03-2009

I stand by my drunken statement. The halo is gay.

Also I think they just increased the drop rate of that Demo Bonnet 'cause 2/3 hats that dropped last night were it, plus Wedge got one. Odd.

Some do seem to be more common, I have not seen the two other pyro hats, the spy beard, the non-hat thing the medic has whose technical name I can not think of...

I wonder if whoever was mining the data when idling would have drop rates for each individual hat

Obtain unlocks through the normal method of doing the achievement milestones, the only ones that I actually had to grind were the medic ones.
Then, you go on playing the game like you normally would, enjoying it.
Then one day you get a hat randomly. You're all like, OMG, that's cool.
Problem solved.

Saying this system is broke because you don't get what you want is making you look like children like saying that WoW is broke (I know that WoW really is broke, but not for the sake of this argument) because you did the Super Duper Raid with your 8 billion person guild 200 thousand times and didn't get your giant dildo shield.

idling and farming are one and the same

Re: Valve speaks - CaffeinePowered - 09-03-2009

Sourcemod plugin that removes halos from player models.....I wonder if you could mod that to remove all silly hats.... :Smile

Re: Valve speaks - Radio Raheem - 09-03-2009

so i had this crazy dream. i dreamed people used an exterior program to get around a really stupid drop system and then some dumbasses got mad and deleted peoples hats. not even valve could be this dumb what a wierd dream right guys

this seems to be what is causing most of the problems (other than legit items being taken). if they had not said that it was the moral high road (LOL) then less people would be dicks/smug about getting a halo.

Also, i agree with nitous and the others who said that they should have at least given a warning, even something as simple as: "idling is bad" would have been nice.

Oh well, not much you can do about it now though.

Its not like there wasn't a track record though, when the medic pack came out first some servers would let you use a console command to instantly unlock everything, all 50 something achievements and get your uber saw.

The people that did this had their accounts flagged and all of their achievements reset, even the general pack ones they earned legit. Not saying what valve did was right, but they have done similar stuff in the past.

Re: Valve speaks - Demitros - 09-03-2009

They could have handled it harder.  I know it says some where that they don't support third party something or the others.

Anyways, they did a good job at alienating 4.5% of their gaming population.  They is something they could have foreseen, given their demographic.  A random system for giving out high demand items was the start of a bad idea.  That aside, it sucks that something that was supposed to be fun turned out this way.  Now they're getting flamed all over the place.

I personally think they did good with TF2 and would like to continue to give them that credit so they don't get discouraged since they REALLY listen to their gamers.  This is also an issue that I could not give less of a shit about.  Seriously.

Normal level's two shits?  I've got like.. a third of one going on.

Re: Valve speaks - copulatingduck - 09-03-2009

it's a lot more than 4.5%

4.5% is just of people who bought the game, not people who still play it. When tf2 peaked in the summer at ~30k online, and the idler program constantly had over 10k, I'd say they screwed over a lot more than 4.5% of active players.

Not me, admittedly, but I figure that most people would realize Valve doesn't like using external applications given their track record...

Okay, well they did a good job of alienating 33.34% of their TF2 gaming population.  Amended.
