is this one of those browser games that i actually have to wait a day to do things again? Do you have to pay real money to get gold or is there another way to get it?

Yea you can only do most things once a day. And there are plenty of ways to get gold. You get gold awarded to you for various things and you can also buy it on the money market.

i managed to land a $4/day job right off the bat, so between that and the food surf sent me, i have a ton extra if youre starving, though surf might still have better means to feed you than myself

Depends what small country. In general, I'd be in, with a few exceptions.
