Have you ever read Rice Boy and its on-going brother Order of Tales?
http://www.rice-boy.com/order/

Here, when you finish that, go ahead and say he should throw in the towel and just draw pretty pictures instead.

I at least understand that XKCD isn't Penny-Arcade or Explosm, with a gag in every strip.

is that not what he was doing (i looked at 2 pages)

i guess what i meant is he should stick to one thing, it's disconcerting to have him write a comic to laugh at one day and a diagram to look at the other, which is a common issue for webcomic artists

i think there's a rut that almost all webcomic (and to a lesser extent physical comic) artists fall into, where they either dont update regularly or they update with stuff that really isn't a comic, penny arcade does this all the time, so does xkcd. cant really think of any other because i dont read many anymore. but i guess i just prefer an occasional comic rather than constant art or whatever

I see it as more of sticking to a schedule, if you say you are going to update twice a week, do so, weekly, monthly, daily....whatever your fancy is, just don't say, I'll post one comic a week then do nothing for months.

yeah, thats a huge issue for me too, if you end up having to change your priorities due to whatever, just tell your audience that, no one's going to blame you

No. He has gags in most strips, and interludes from that are nice, because it isn't a story-driven comic. In fact its practically "a little bit of everything" comic, from philosophical issues to mathematical ones.

But what I really see here is that you essentially demand that they mostly update consistently on a schedule, and then produce work that you deem is "in genre", because fuck them if they decide they want to do something they want once in a while.

Go back to reading shit you pay for.

I found this article pretty compelling and honestly the comments were pretty good as well, for and against. In fact I'm kinda curious how Krugman got such a higher level of commenters on his article?
