But... but.. everyone loves corporations, right??? And I mean, they clearly are going to make the best decisions for everyone because of free trade or some other talking point BS and they're people too and deserve rights to free speech and stuff, except when its inconvenient for them to be people in which case they aren't! Gah.

If corporations wish to speak they should do so through their employees, a corporation does not vote, their shareholders and employees however do, and it is unrealistic to think that people would suddenly divest of a firm or resign if they don't like the way they are spending money politically.

Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - Ungodly - 01-21-2010

I honestly want to punch Justice Kennedy for saying that corporations' rights to free speech are being trampled, when, you know, corporations aren't really people are they.

Well they are psuedo-people which is why you can sue them and collect taxes from them. It's constitutionally vague to what extent these rights apply though because they really didn't have to deal with this issue back then. But it's longheld legal opinion that corporations have some degree of personhood, this just greatly expands their rights. Probably to the detriment of ours.

Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - Ungodly - 01-21-2010

I guess what I was going for is that the corporation as a whole doesn't seem like it should have the Bill of Rights applied to it like a person, as Justice Kennedy implied when he said that the corporation, as an entity, was having its rights to free speech trampled. It just sounds ludicrous treating a corporation like a full blown person, and especially saying that it is having its "rights trampled". As you said, they're treated as pseudo-people for taxation/lawsuits/etc, but that really doesn't seem like it should give them the full status of a person in the eyes of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. But I'm not a justice or a law student, so I dunno. Its clearly going to be a decision that is felt by the American people though when corporations can even more easily buy off politicians without even a semblance of not directly bribing them.

Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - beep beep diglett - 01-21-2010

currently corporations are not people, they are a natural force that you cant blame for anything because....
