Well Coraline was written by Neil Gaiman, who's a master of fucked-upetry, and Fantastic Mr Fox was written by Roald Dahl who is also a master at that shit. I'm not super surprised there. I heard an interview of the person who wrote Roald Dahl's biography, he said Dahl was proud of the fact that he could act like a child, and write things that could scare a child, but not _too_ much. Re: The Movie Thread - Surf314 - 10-06-2010 Think about it though, children stories used to be harsh as fuck. Now they are finally going back to their roots. American Tail was heart breaking, and The Secret of Nymh was scary as shit.
I'm not saying that STORYTELLING for children is becoming more complicated and mature, I'm talking about it simply in the realm of film. I think it's a good thing that these more complex stories are being made into movies, period. And yes, similar films have been made for a very long time, but it's refreshing to see so many in such a short period of time lately. As Surf said, children's stories were generally always harsh, harsh tales designed to teach kids lessons. It's more recently that children's stories/movies have gone just to the fluff avenue for entertainment sake. It's nice that more traditional children stories are being told by Hollywood once again. Re: The Movie Thread - KarthXLR - 10-07-2010 Speaking of children's movies... This was surprisingly enjoyable. Very mellow, but fun film. Stop motion animation looks good for the most part. Re: The Movie Thread - rumsfald - 10-09-2010 also, what the furries. ps. - i have the graphic novel, might sell it in a yard sale tomarra. Re: The Movie Thread - Dtrain323i - 10-11-2010 Went and saw Wall Street on saturday. I wouldn't really call it a sequel at all. Just a different movie with a couple characters appearing from the 1st movie. Re: The Movie Thread - KarthXLR - 10-11-2010 Just watched a bundle of short films from a film festival. Some of them were good, most were alright or boring. Re: The Movie Thread - KarthXLR - 10-12-2010 Watched The Third Man. Liked it overall, but a lot of the dialogue didn't stick with me. The cinematography, acting, and music were all great. Re: The Movie Thread - KarthXLR - 10-12-2010 omg this was great. Re: The Movie Thread - Maxon - 10-15-2010 Jackass 3D...Greatest use of 3D Technology yet? Maybe...Maybe...Stupidest? Of course! Good, sick, fun, film. More on the scale of the first movie, but still funny as hell.
