Can you damn kids keep it down a bit? - Tragic Hero - 08-02-2008

I know I'm going to come off sounding like the type of guy who bangs on his ceiling with a broom stick to get the upstairs neighbors to shut up but I thought I would bring this up.

I think too many people are abusing the freedoms of all talk.  I know everyone has a good time just bullshitting on the server but when I go to play and 3 people are talking at the same time and people are telling stories most of the time it just gets annoying.

Now I can handle little quips and maybe some impressions of Herbert from Family guy from time to time during a game and perhaps some little banter but when people are competing with each other and pretty much having full fledged conversations just seems a bit too much.

Does anyone else feel the same way or am I the only one who thinks people are abusing the freedoms of "All-Talk"?

I dunno, I can see how it can get annoying, but its also one of the big reasons I love to come here.

It definitely gets annoying when too many people are talking over each other all the time but I'd really miss it if we weren't able to just fool around somewhat.

Re: Can you damn kids keep it down a bit? - Surf314 - 08-02-2008

I like all-talk and conversations but it comes with a caveat.  If the server is full or serious don't try and have a conversation.  Dont monopolize the mic.  Also let other people talk and don't talk over them.

Basically just be polite.

Re: Can you damn kids keep it down a bit? - [fr31ns]Karrde - 08-02-2008

Agreed.  I love all talk.  But to monopolize the mic.  I know I'm loud but I try to be defferential, too.

I know.  Thats why I love playing on the server too.  And thats one of the reasons why it was hard (as hard as it can be) to make this topic but it seems more and more people are just abusing the privilege.  Not only just monopolizing the mic but not even waiting for someone to finish talking.  Just people talking while someone else is because they are excited to say something funny (or something they think is funny).

Re: Can you damn kids keep it down a bit? - timepants - 08-02-2008

I only use my mic to say things like "HEY SO-AND-SO THERE'S A SPY BEHIND YOU!!!!!!!!!!!" If someone is telling a story, I won't wait for them to finish so I can give my warning. Is that acceptable?

Some people need to tone down the 'play by play' commentary, you know who you are  Tongue

Rike, Karth, and Squishy, I'm looking at you. There's no need to hold down the mic button while you seize up with what can only be described as fits of squeaking, shrieking, laughter. It sounds like a bunch of laughing hyenas having sex.  >Sad

edit: Hmm, actually Karth, you're not really the hyena-sex-hound that splits my ears. You just get people to doing nothing but talking. The other 2 kill me though. Sad

Ooh. I heard that one.

Well, I treat TF2 like I would, say, a board game. If you're playing a game of Monopoly, it's largely conversation, plus a diversion. So it's going to be lot of talking, and then a certain portion of it, maybe 30% or so, will focus around the game. So if you want to talk, talk, but don't let it overrule communication about the game at hand.

Re: Can you damn kids keep it down a bit? - Eschatos - 08-02-2008

I enjoy the conversation.  No muting unless the person is being a douchebag about it.

I need to curtail my "hit-V-on-death" habit.  It's starting to become a knee-jerk reaction.  Sometimes I don't even say anything but I tap PTT anyway in case I did have a QQ to hurl at my killer.

There's a few people that do it, myself included. You can usually here the loathing in their deep breaths, I like to think it's a verbal facepalm of sorts.

Re: Can you damn kids keep it down a bit? - cannedpeahes - 08-03-2008

I think I kind of make a half-hearted grunt or a sigh, and if the kill was especially gorgeous I'll normally give some props, but that's about it.

I think the point is being missed.  Grunts and Sighs and all things like that are acceptable (in my eyes at least).  I have no problem with such things.  But when people go on 5 minute rants about hypotheticals and you have 2 people talking at the same time while said person is talking it is just annoying.  Talking on all talk is cool but to discuss your manifesto on the server is just going a bit too far.
