Computer repeatedly crashing/restarting/powering off when I'm away. - KarthXLR - 10-21-2009

Ok, so a day or two ago, I noticed that my computer had restarted without my permission (Most likely a windows forced restart, I'd bet.), but it seems that every time I've left my computer, asleep or not, for a few hours, it either crashes or restarts. I know this, because a window will pop up every time I log saying, "Windows has recovered from an unexpected error" or something like that. Is this a problem with the computer? Do I have a virus? I really have no idea what to do.

Here are my specs if they are needed:
Windows Vista 32-bit
1.6 GHz Core Duo
4 GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia 9800 GT
220 GB HD

Your computer is blue screening, but you don't see it because of Microsoft's 'changes'.

Turn off automatic restarts: Right-click on My Computer and select properties (or press Windows+Pause, Click on Advanced System Settings). Click 'Settings' under 'Startup and Recovery'. Uncheck 'Automatically Reset', and reboot.

Might be, gonna do a full scan.

I completely forgot to say why disabling automatic restarts is helpful.
A BSOD actually contains useful information, and it's very hard to read when the system restarts.

The error codes generated have many a time indicated what piece of hardware is about to bite the dust

I'm actually kind of hoping my processor might die, then I can get a better one! Smile

My computer was store bought, so there's no reason why it shouldn't be activated.

Edit: looking at my computer settings, it says that windows it activated. wat

ahh, sorry for some reason i thought you were running 7
didn't look close enough..

the reason that's showing up is because windows is detecting a change in hardware
so.... something is really fucked up on your rig

also, your desktop is atrocious, clean up the fucking icons..

I bet you guys would love my desktop.  Until I needed more hard drive space 90% of the screen was covered in icons.

memtest86

Re: Computer repeatedly crashing/restarting/powering off when I'm away. - HeK - 10-23-2009

If MemTest86 causes your PC to reboot, try MemTest86+.
I've found the original MemTest86 to have problems with some chipset USB controllers, like the Intel P43.

Re: Computer repeatedly crashing/restarting/powering off when I'm away. - KarthXLR - 10-23-2009

running memtest86 right now.
