Exclamation points! I hate them in serious writing! I had a reporting teacher that said every time you use one it takes a bit off your life so use them with caution and only when they are absolutely necessary. Who agrees? Are they good at getting a point across or over used to the point of being worthless?

F them.

It differs depending on what you're doing. If you're just chatting with a friend on steam or something, then it's perfectly fine to use them as much as you want. If you were writing a paper or a serious piece of writing, then it would most likely be best to leave them out almost always. Very rarely do I ever use an exclamation point on a writing assignment.

exclamation points are just modifiers for people who can't express themselves fully enough with words

I agree with this but also with turtle, certain kinds of online chatting just seem to beg for needless punctuation  Tongue

Also sometimes I like to use them ironically so I can be a cool hipster dude  8)

The only time I use them is when expressing something with a lot of emotion...

Example: Holy shit, Just Cause 2 is awesome!

I do believe they are called exclamation points for a reason. No need to exclaim everything. :Smile

Any joke, no matter how funny it would have been otherwise, instantly becomes not funny when you end it with an exclamation point.

As someone who writes military operational manuals as a part of my day-to-day activities, I live by exclamation points.

They save lives.

!!!DO NOT POINT BARREL OF WEAPON AT FACE!!!

Re: Grammar Battle Round 2 - !!!! - ZargonX - 04-22-2010

It is established fact that the exclamation point is a mere appetizer in the buffet of grammar, whetting the appetite for the far more meaty interrobang.

Am I right, or am I right!?

Re: Grammar Battle Round 2 - !!!! - exanimo2 - 04-22-2010

There is a time and place for them. As long as they're not over used and don't include 1's in them, it's a great tool for showing excitement.

Interrobang sounds like grammar porn.

I put hate, but I think that when well placed and only used maybe once through an entire article or paper can be kinda nice, because it is really bringing more attention to that place - setting it apart from everything.  The emotion and conviction behind what's being said finally climaxed into a yell - followed by a bit of summing up?
