Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - PyroZombie - 05-07-2010

Here, feel free to call me T.R., because I am a technology retard. I don't know shit about anything about computers. I am listening to a few sources but their my friends and will fuck with my head at times, and I want to be completely sure I'm getting the right computer.

To just bring you into the light, My computer I'm using now is a complete piece of shit, according to previously stated sources, and this is the only thing I truly understand. This thing is complete horseshit, I can barely run half-life on this thing. I can play TF2, but only if I use the lowest settings and no one is with me and I'm not firing anything, or taunting.

I have my eyes set on a HP - Pavilion Elite Desktop with AMD Phenom™ II Quad-Core Processor for about 900 dollars, not including the sales tax and protection plan. The only problem is half of my friends tell me I'm getting fucked by best-buy, and the other side tells me "Go for it".

So I was looking in this section of the site, looking at some threads, checking for cheaper computers but I simply don't know. You all seem pretty bright on these things so I'm hoping to get your opinion on this thing.

Here's a link to the thing:

A preemptive thank you to all.

UPDATE:

My brother found the same computer with some better cards, and the user review says with tax it's just over 1000 dollars, which I can in two maybe three weeks.

UPDATF2:Fuck that, I'm not paying double price.

It's been scientifically proven that having us help you pick out parts for your computer and then you building it yourself will, at least partly, cure your techtardation.

Build it: it's cheaper, it's more upgradeable and you get better parts.

or better yet stop by at IRC and ask us

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - beep beep diglett - 05-07-2010

yeah other than wiring its basically just expensive legos

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - Versus - 05-07-2010

yeah, and it's just a few legos to put together too

wiring is just minimally harder

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - copulatingduck - 05-07-2010

the wiring is just like legos too, except your piece literally can only be connected to 1 other piece

someone should rez the build-a-rig thread

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - [fr31ns]Karrde - 05-07-2010

Yeah, unless you need a lappy, build it yourself.

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - PyroZombie - 05-07-2010

I've thought about the whole "building a computer or having someone build a computer" thing and I have found a lot of problems with it;

-I can't buy parts on the internet.
-I can't find a store that sells parts locally.
-The only builder I've found is my brother's friend who can be a douche.
-I am not only technologically stupid, but also very busy at times and will half-complete drawings and projects and never pick them back up again.
-No tools.

I'm not real comfortable with the idea. I have most of the money, I just want to know if I buy this thing, is this going to perform or is this a hunk of shit?

Oh I didn't know there was a thread meant for this, sorry.

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - Geoff - 05-07-2010

why cant you buy on the internet

and build it yourself, dummy.  its time to be a little bit less of a retard.  if neonie (<3) can do it you can.  and the most youll need is a fucking screwdriver.

not for your post, but in the past people would just list parts for computers, that way anyone looking to build had a great place to start from

Re: Computer-dolt looking for a computer. - Vandamguy - 05-07-2010

The only advantage you gain buying from bestbuy would be the warranty.

If you're building it yourself you're going to have to do your own tech support and possible warranty claims on dead parts (yes they die, register your shit so you get full warranty protection.)

With the instore warranty you'll be paying a modest fee for some fuckmonkey to do these things for you. And the turn around time can be anywhere from 4 days to 6 weeks.

Hope that clarifies the difference between buying from the store and DIY.

I would recommend DIY. It's really not that hard. Like the guys are saying it's lego. most of the parts wont fit in any way except they way they're supposed to. The manual you get with the motherboard will teach you most of what you need to know (CPU orientation is important).
You also get to choose what parts go in your rig. Which will extend the lifespan of your computer. (HP will always buy the lowest bidders shit, chinese transisitors vs japanese)

If you dont have the attention span to start and finish a build then go play xbox Smile

One thing that scared me is that he said he can't buy computer parts online, and no one mentions Newegg.
