Troubleshooting Ping Issues - CaffeinePowered - 06-14-2010

Ping issues for me hit a crescendo last night with TF2 being nigh unplayable, the following in a traceroute I did..

Code:
Tracing route to 8.12.20.112 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1     1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.1
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3    12 ms    12 ms     8 ms  172.31.17.181
  4    50 ms    14 ms    13 ms  216.55.8.25
  5    13 ms    43 ms    14 ms  vb1700.rar3.chicago-il.us.xo.net [216.156.0.161]

  6    19 ms    13 ms    15 ms  ae0d1.cir1.chicago2-il.us.xo.net [207.88.13.5]
  7    13 ms    18 ms    15 ms  206.111.2.138.ptr.us.xo.net [206.111.2.138]
  8    21 ms    27 ms    32 ms  te2-1-10G.ar5.CHI1.gblx.net [67.17.106.133]
  9   254 ms    37 ms    26 ms  xe-2-0-5.ar2.ord1.us.nlayer.net [69.31.111.222]

10    65 ms   242 ms   163 ms  as20473.xe-1-0-5-1615.ar2.ord1.us.nlayer.net [69
.31.111.178]
11    15 ms    42 ms    24 ms  8.12.20.112

Trace complete.

My main concern is that #2, which I think might be the modem, because subsequent traceroutes have the ping on the downstream leveling out, but the 2nd hop continues to time out.

I tried connecting directly to the modem but all that did was eliminate the first hop to the router. When Im directly connected and I ping the gateway of the modem, things seem to respond just fine.

The parents have said they have had complete internet outages during the day, but I have not had any of these at night. I have added a second wireless router to connect my DS, however DNS on that is disabled, so it should just be a pass through and not cause any issues.

Anyone have any ideas? At this point my top option is replacing the modem, which is almost 10 years old and apparently no longer accepting firmware updates according to the tech.

Run a test.  Borrow someone else's modem and see if it's the same?

Assuming you have Cable, call them to come look at it? Probably just need a new modem and/or old cables coming into your place?

They can't cause no one else knows how anything is set up on the network...or how to fix it should something go wrong Wink

Not that anything would go wrong but accidents do happen....

I am thinking its the modem, but it just seems odd and the cable is buried, to even look at it they'd have to dig up the back yard.
