So dat dere recording... - Wrath Of Sandvich - 06-18-2010

Whats a good program to record gameplay? I'm starting a new youtube channel to post tf2 related junk. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

FRAPS is what a lot of people use. It more or less records exactly what you see on your screen and is controlled with the push of a button. The files are usually pretty high quality but will also eat your hard drive up. I personally have had issues with the program spitting out corrupted files but perhaps you won't have a problem with it. You'll probably have to pirate buy a full version because trial versions limit you to 30 second clips, the last time I checked. Oh, and keep in mind that recording with fraps will cause noticeable graphical lag as you play. It's a pretty poor choice if you want to record frag footage.

If you're posting TF2 stuff, all games that run the source engine have a built-in recorder. You remember how everyone talks about "recording demos" to fix graphical glitches in-game? Well those demos can be played back and exported into a variety of mediums. The advantages provided by using the source recorder are that the demo files take up scarcely any space, and are "lossless". The big problem with it, however, is that updates to the game tend to make old demos unplayable. There are some decent video tutorials around, just search for "source recorder" or something similar.

I know there were a lot of other recording software posted on the forums recently as well. Search around a bit.

fraps

also, you're going to want to record onto a second drive

i'll give you some more info when i get home from work

FRAPS is sick....if you are playing a game with terrible graphics.

If you are really playing any game at a high level, introducing graphical lag is a bad idea. I have an ok computer, and Fraps wasn’t a problem with TF2 (I was just awful) but made other games (BC2, MW2) unplayable.

WeGame is lighter, or so I have heard. I would recommend that.

In tf2 I would recommend using the in game demo recorder, and then use SEADS to convert it using the video codec of your choice.

I think you can record a demo at terrible graphics settings for maximum capture fps, then play back the demo with max settings at the same fps you recorded at. I think I also heard that, only during demo playback, fraps shouldn't affect your framerate.

record a demo then fraps the demo is usually better for not serious shit but you can use source recorder if you want it to look good

Re: So dat dere recording... - zaneyard - 06-18-2010

fraps will negatively affect your computer if you don't have a powerful rig
however, recording to a drive that isn't being read by the game is something that fixed the majority of my problems
also the FPS you set fraps to record at makes your game go at that rate
so if i set fraps to record at 60, game would go 60 fps; 20, game would go 20 fps

it's always just better to use the engine supported recorder if one is available, but if you want something that will work for everything go for fraps.

I'd definitely say you're better off either with a sourcetv demo or a player demo, then rerecording something like that to something else. Otherwise you're burning a shitton of HDD space for video, most of which you're going to toss. If you're doing scripted recording, record with sourcetv so that you can pick and choose how you want to 'shoot' the action, if you just want to record yourself doing pimp shit then stick with a player demo.
