Need new cans, open to suggestions - copulatingduck - 09-15-2010 With employment comes lots of disposable income (I don't spend much of anything on anything). I'd like some new headphones that are more comfortable than my current set (senn hd 280pros) and sound better. One of the dudes at work has been running around with those fancy Dr Dre Beats phones and I'm kind of jealous. I want to be ostentatious too, though I prefer comfort and sound over something that will pop the ladies' lipgloss. So if anyone has any suggestions, that'd be great, cuz I don't have tons of time to research this sort of thing, and I figured there's already a few reasonably knowledgeable folks lurking that could help a bro out. Budget I'll set at $300 unless you can give me a compelling reason to spend otherwise Re: Need new cans, open to suggestions - Mission Difficult - 09-15-2010 Grado Labs SR325i's are really nice. They're open air and supra-aural (no noise isolation and they sit on your ears instead of over them) if you're ok with that. If you want closed circumaural I would recommend the Ultrasone Pro 550's. For travel I use an old pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40's. Not too expensive and sound decent. Edit: Keep in mind that you're going to need 1/8" to 1/4" adapters for all of the above. Re: Need new cans, open to suggestions - Didzo - 09-15-2010 I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. It is relevant to my interests. I've done the koss plug radioshack mod. (~ 20 bucks) I've done the etymotic er4ps (~200 bucks and 50 every other year for filters/plugs/new wires. Yes, the wires break). I used these for mobile use. They're ok, fine, but finicky to get placed. I've done sony on-ear and over-ear (both 100-150, forget the models). The best, absofuckinglutely best sound I ever had, is from Grado SR-60s. Mission provided the link. Mine are the cheapest (60-80 bones)....I'm sure the upper-scale grados are even better, but I really can't comprehend how much better they could be. My pair is like 3 years old, and still makes me wet. They can stand up to being plugged into my guitar amp when I don't want to wake the neighbors. Re: Need new cans, open to suggestions - k0ala - 09-17-2010 Rock the hell on; I brought home a guitar and practice amp the other day, and I was just thinking I needed headphones. EDIT: Fuck, the place I picked (Palmetto Audio) took its time to charge my card, is just passing the buck to Grado to do a drop-shipment, and now the Grado factory is saying it can't make the latest batch because they're waiting on parts. At least I got free shipping for my patience. And I'll have some cans fresh off the assembly line. Re: Need new cans, open to suggestions - WaR1761 - 10-21-2010 I have a pair of Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones, I like bass so I enjoy these. Shittiest part is that the cups are a little to small for my ears so it can get uncomfortable for long sessions. This is actually due to them being supra-aural design vs circumaural. Basiclly part of the ear vs fully around the ear. What kind of interface are you looking for? 3.5mm, phono plug, USB? Also think about what kind of music you listen to since that will help you narrow down some choices. For example SURE head phones are sweet for classical but they are about 3-4mm away from your ear drum if worn properly so if the cable is moving on your shirt or your running around you will hear all of those vibrations along with your music. Behind the head headphones are great if your fussy about your hair... or if you find yourself taking them on and off a lot... I know I do at work with interuptions. Nice, my first pair of high-impedance cans, so I won't be listening to the discman without an amp, but I got them expressly for plugging into the baby Marshall, so that's where they'll stay. Re: Need new cans, open to suggestions - rumsfald - 10-23-2010 broke my third cord in like 4 years on the etymotics. I think I'm done with their shit. They're the best sounding earbuds, but it's such a pain in the ass to lose a channel when walking to work and be out of commission for a week. I picked up a really really cheap pair of jbuds that are mostly muddy and a set of koss portapros - which are surprisingly good if you can get past the fact that they are ugly as sin.
