Building a rig for my cousin [UPDATE] - KarthXLR - 10-06-2010

My uncle asked me to pick parts and build a computer for my cousin, so I'm going through the ropes of buying another computer. He's not an extreme gamer, but he plays enough to desire above average specs. Nothing top of the line. As-per-usual, I'm coming to you gentlemen for help.

UPDATE: Here's the situation: My cousin wants to play on his HDTV. I need to get a card that supports HDMI, obviously. Will an HDTV (probably 30-something inches) impact performance much? Also I'm just going to throw in a wi-fi card to avoid complications. He'll learn soon enough that multiplayer gaming requires a good wired connection.
Also, no speakers needed.

Motherboard
- Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H

Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Quad Core

Video Card - XFX Radeon HD 5830 1GB 256-bit

PSU - XFX P1-650X-CAH9 650W ATX12V v2.2 / ESP12V v2.91 . This will go in the bottom, right?

HDD
- Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM

RAM - G. Skill 2x 2GB

DVD Drive - Lite-On Black 24X

Case - LIAN LI Lancool PC-K58W

OS - Windows 7 Professional

Wi-Fi card - Linksys WMP54G IEEE 802.11b/g

Artic 5 Thermal Compound - $10

Total: $831 (as of 12/10)

Mouse and Keyboard - Pending

COMBOS:
CPU, Mobo, RAM, and HDD
PSU and Video Card

If I've missed a combo I can use, tell me, please.

They don't care. But I'm not going to make them assume they need to buy a top of the line rig for $1700. I'm guessing the range is between 600 and 900 dollars.

Re: Building a rig for my cousin. - KarthXLR - 10-07-2010

Updated the list after doing a bit of research. Couldn't find any combos to suit my needs, any alternatives or coupons?

Re: Building a rig for my cousin. - Versus - 10-07-2010

don't need a sound card.

mouse - logitech G500 or logitech MX518

keyboard - logitech G110, which is basically the G15 minus the screen, or just get a G15

headset - i had these a while ago, they were good i guess. or you could get some cheap grados (hi mission) and a standalone mic

wifi card - http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10208#1020812

Most of these look good, but my cousin is sort of a downie and might want a wireless mouse and keyboard.

Also, I have no idea weather or not he wants wired or wifi. That's something I'll have to talk about to my uncle tomorrow.

Re: Building a rig for my cousin. - Versus - 10-08-2010

after being on wifi for a few years, wired rapes it pretty hard

wireless mouse/keyboard = no

It's really not my choice at this point. I'll tell my uncle about this next time I see him, but I have no guaruntees that wired(internet and apparatuses) is an option.

He's hooking the thing up to a big tv, so I'm assuming he'll WANT wireless.

Re: Building a rig for my cousin. - Didzo - 10-08-2010

Missed a combo here.

currently sniping on a 10 dollar wireless mouse

get owned, mice dont really matter imo and since this isnt like some hardcore gamer....

Wirelss mice don't matter un untill the 1st time it loses it's connection when you're doing something, then it matters a lot.

Or when one of the many electronic devices nearby interfere, or when it just straight up stops working...

Cheap wired mouse > cheap wireless mouse.

I know wired is almost always better, but again, this isn't really my choice in the matter. I'll ask my uncle about it next time I see him.

I was just debating whoever said anything positive about wireless mice for gaming at all, no real relevance to the topic tbh. I have a wireless keyboard/mouse for my 2nd pc because its 6 feet away.
