Weird Boot Problems *HeK Signal* ;P - [fr31ns]Karrde - 11-28-2010

OK so I can't get my comp to boot.  Windows kicks out an error saying it won't boot and I should try to do a repair.

File: \boot\bcd

Error occurred while trying to read boot config.  Somehow I'm guessing the windows install got borked.  It's RAID1 and initially I thought the RAID might have tanked, but it reads as normal, bootable, and I can see both member disks.  I'm guessing this doesn't rule out HDD failure though.  Any ideas?

First up, which OS?

Also, are you using a stand alone RAID controller or a software-managed onboard dealy?

You could try this:

Boot from your OS cd (assuming windows 7)
Click the repair your computer.

You may need the RAID controller drivers on a USB key so that the boot cd can actually see your drive volume.

Then click the 'startup repair' option when presented.

If that doesn't work, I have some other tricks.

Ok, I've been doing some work.  It's looking like the partition table is completely borked.  Is there anyway to repair this?

*edit*

Well, I managed to get back into windows.  Backing up everything I can, I think this install is pretty well trashed.

For some reason the boot loader for windows never installed when I installed windows, and both methods of installing it post-install haven't worked. I have to have my Win7 DVD in the drive when I boot up so the CD boot loader can kick in then wait for me to not press a key to boot from the DVD so it throws it over to the HDD.

Whee.

Tried removing the HDD from your boot order?

Well, almost got this thing put back together.  No idea what could have corrupted windows.  Drives all checkout fine.
