New boot SSD - Surf314 - 04-29-2011
30 gigs is proving to not be enough with updates and such so I was thinking of upgrading my boot drive. I'm between the vertex 3 and the intel, any thoughts? Also should I use a data migration program (intel comes with one) or just run a windows install and restore a backup?

The major issues outlined in that article have since been overcome by most chipset manufacturers. Sandforce for example.
Also, 30gb is fucking tiny. With office suites and many other common applications hitting huge install sizes, just get a cheapo 120gb Vertex2E. They are under $140 up here.

Was going to say this. That article is nearly 2 years old and it's validity vs modern chipsets is pretty much void now. The latest sandforce based SSD's have really been blowing (just about) any of Intel's drives away solidly.

Not to mention the price of the Sandforce-based drives.
Should see how they compare to the SSDs in my EVA SAN. Fucking $2300 for 72gb.

So vertex 3 if I have SATA 3, vertex 2 if I don't? Should I bother trying to use a data migration tool or should I just reinstall from a backup?

Vertex 3 if you can justify the price, otherwise Vertex2.
You will need SATA3 to fully utilize the read speed of a Vertex 3 drive.

Don't most boards come with sata3 now?
Also if you can afford it get the Vertex 3 and be set if you already have a mobo with only sata2 and you upgrade in the future.
