Brbufest 2016 - Dtrain323i - 07-25-2015

Per the discussion currently going on in groupme. Would people be interested in perhaps foregoing ACEN next year and instead doing a brbu only get together in Canadia?

Pros:

1. Less Hectic

2. No need to plan out cosplays

3. No con plague/funk

4. Possibly Cheaper

5. Longer than 3/4 days

Cons:

1. No con experience (no panels, cosplay, silliness)

2. Bit harder to get to. (Especially for folks on the coasts)

3. Sleeping space probably at a premium (same with ACEN)

4. Need to acquire a passport.

Right now its just an idea to throw around. But I feel that we've gotten to the point where were more concerned about seeing each other once a year rather than doing a con get together. Anyway, let me know what you all think. I know Luin and Hek are on board.

Re: Brbufest 2016 - The Generic Name - 07-25-2015

So basically, what your saying is....Do what I planned on doing anyway except I skip ACEN?  Hmmmm....Theres $400 I can use towards getting there.  Yeah Alright.

Re: Brbufest 2016 - Luinbariel - 07-25-2015

We are definitely game to have friends here! I miss my nerd family  :'(

One possible issue would be space. We can have nerds here, but we don't have a ton of sleeping space: there are two normal sized couches (bit short for the tall people though most likely), and one huge couch downstairs that has a pull out bed and still room for a tall person to easily sleep. Of course there's lots of floor space, but we've only got the one air mattress (could get more sleeping mats and stuff).

In all likelihood we wouldn't spend that much time at our house anyway though. It would be divided up between chilling at the lake, and at my parent's, if people wanted. A little city sight-seeing of course, but that's honestly all doable in an afternoon.

At the lake, there's enough beds for quite a few (as well as, again, a ton of floor space). There's a separate guest cabin with it's own bathroom and shower as well.We can't really swim off the dock anymore as the dock is gone (and the underlying crib has lots of sharp nails and stuff, so probably best not to swim from there) but there are lots of beaches. We could just take over the entire beach for the day and drink all night.

So all that text aside, what I'm saying is it's likely you're going to be without a bed for a few days, in case that kind of thing bothers you.
My parents have a few extra beds at their place as well, but they also have a giant yard and if you've got tents, there's space galore. There's even a park that you can easily walk to in the land behind theirs that has modern bathrooms and such, so we could just take over the park and have a huge party there if we wanted to. It's super quiet, you can camp there, you can have a huge bonfire, and there's horseshoe pits, ball diamonds, a playground (!!!!!!) etc.
There's also a lake nearby we could take over for the day. I don't know what the condition of it is though as I haven't been to it in some years, but last I heard it's being renovated quite a bit and should be really nice.

It'd have to be a bit later than ACEN though. Mid may is not going to be warm enough if you're going to be camping/swimming, not by a long shot.

OMG I'M SO EXCITED

Re: Brbufest 2016 - Dtrain323i - 07-25-2015

I'm fine with doing a June/July trip

Re: Brbufest 2016 - KarthXLR - 07-26-2015

Of course, it's when I'm outta school when y'all decide to skip ACEN.  b)

Sounds fun, if my funds are good I'd be interested in it.

Do want, although damn flying to Canada is expensive.

Yep Sad

I would suggest maybe making a max attendance allotment and then see who can commit.

Not too sure what sort of number to put on that... I'll wait for HeK to chime in.

I'd also feel really bad turning people away if they really wanted to come. I'm pretty confident we could make it work for a decent number, somehow

Since some questions are coming up in the Groupme, here's some information about what you can and can't bring to Canada, bla bla bla etc.

Oh good, I can bring The F-35 Lightning II hover-jet fighter the US gov issues to all citizens for Freedom purposes.

But for real, if I were to do this I would likely drive up and back if it turns out to be cheaper.  This site claims gas would be less than half the cost of a plane ticket, round-trip, even with the 15mpg SUV beast I drive right now.  With a more efficient car that I plan to have by then it would be like a quarter.  I've also driven half that distance in a day twice a year for as long as I can remember, it would be a fun trip for me.

Re: - Dtrain323i - 07-27-2015

My plan is to drive since its literally a straight shot from Omaha to Winnipeg

It is possible to fly into Fargo or even Grand Forks, ND. Thats the closest you can fly before crossing the invisible paywall of Canada.

I priced out a flight on a whim. I was able to find round trip tickets for $498

Re: Brbufest 2016 - The Generic Name - 07-28-2015

I would be planning on driving as well, however if anyone wanted to drive with me, they would need two weeks at least that they could commit.

Generic's gonna take you on a wild ride

Also talking about it with HeK; I don't think we can realistically accommodate more than about 10 people. 12 would be taxing it big time, for the times we'd have to spend at our house.

So it's gonna come down to who's seriously considering coming out, and who's just toying with the idea. I really hate the idea of cutting folks, I want the whole nerd crowd, but it just ain't likely.

Should we make like a poll or something?

First come first serve sign-ups, and yes cutting it off sucks, but you can only do so many. If its first come first server sign up you really aren't turning people away so much as knowing your limits and only having the people that can afford to put in for it.

Re: Brbufest 2016 - Luinbariel - 07-28-2015

Alright, consider this a call for an interest list, then.

Like we did for ACEN, I'm going to keep a sheet with names of folks who are interested, and later, who is confirmed for attendance.

I understand that interest may change based on the actual date we pick out. It seems we're shooting for a date somewhere in July or August, depending on what time I can book off. (which won't be known until April of next year, sorry!).
I'll update this post and my sheet stuff happens.

Gonna say the max number of slots is probably 15; we can likely have a few more once we're actually not at our house (at the cabin), so if some of you plan to drive straight to the cabin or something, we can probably tag a few more on. But for the like one or two days we're all at the house... Well, I hope you all love each other very much 'cause it gon' be tight.

If I already put you on here and you don't wanna go, tell me. If I missed you, tell me. Kbye

@Luinbariel @HeK

Room for an RV?

Re: Brbufest 2016 - Didzo - 07-29-2015

There should be a conference call video chat sort of thing one of the evenings so that partying can be done remotely with those who can't physically attend.

Re: Brbufest 2016 - rumbot - 07-29-2015

Don't worry about skyping. The RV is to kidnap you.
