Need help with custom sprays - korkesh - 05-14-2008

I'm getting a problem when I try to upload custom sprays that I make.
Eveytime I upload them into the game they appear completely black in the preview and when I go to use them in game I can't even see the spray but the sound plays.

Im using the most recent verion of VTFedit, please help.

Re: Need help with custom sprays - copulatingduck - 05-14-2008

For your spray to show up in the preview, you need to copy the file into TWO directories:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\korkesh\team fortress 2\tf\materials\VGUI\logos

and

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\korkesh\team fortress 2\tf\materials\VGUI\logos\UI

That'll make sure your spray has a preview. Also make sure the server you're on allows sprays.

When your spray is open in VTFEdit, does it actually show the spray? Also, go to View > Mask. If your spray turns transparent checkerboarded there, that means your spray is invisible in game.

'Duck, perhaps you can answer this, then...

We've seen numerous exploits pinched off.
We've endured the demo / soldier nerf.
We've hotly debated the merits of cp_badlands.
We've pushed little cart on pl_goldrush.

Why does the TF2 spray import module remain a total idiot in light of Counterstrike: Source's?  Why?  Why?  WHY?!

Why can't TF2 just import whatever?  Why do I have to go into CS:S to import it and then copy it to TF2?

Someone please explain this ludicrous oversight to me.

I don't know anymore! I give up Valve! Do you want me to hate your games?

I didn't even know that CS:S had working spray importer-type stuff. Thank you Fail Medic for pointing out this horrible oversight, and thank you for pushing me over the edge.
;_;

edit: Korkesh, it sounds like it might be simpler to import your spray using CS:S

Re: Need help with custom sprays - Fail Medic - 05-14-2008

I'll clarify the CS:S method of flipping the bird at TF2's spray importer.
[tt]
1.  Load Counterstrike: Source.
2.  Go to Options -> Multiplayer.
3.  Click Import Spray.  Select any typical image by using the file browser.
4.  You should now see the image thumbnailed in the "Spraypaint image" box.  Great success.
5.  Close CS:S.
6.  Find the VGUI folder in...
    ~:\Steam\SteamApps\YourAccountName\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials
... and copy it to this location:
    ~:\Steam\SteamApps\YourAccountName\team fortress 2\tf\materials
7.  The VGUI folder in your CS:S stuff should now be copied in your TF2 stuff.
8.  Any sprays you imported in CS:S should now be available in TF2's spray drop-down in the Options -> Multiplayer tab.
9.  Repeat this process for other sprays.  Just leave the CS:S VGUI folder alone and it'll just archive all new sprays you import.  Just do a fresh VGUI copy to TF2 when needed.
[/tt]

The line must be drawn here.  This far, no further!!  And 'Duck, we will make them pay for what they've done!

Re: Need help with custom sprays - korkesh - 05-15-2008

I have put my spray in the designated folders and I can see my picture in VTFEdit with or without the mask.
Is it maybe the file type that I am using(PNG), or is there certain options I should use in the flags box in the VTFEdit?

Re: Need help with custom sprays - copulatingduck - 05-15-2008

Hmmmm. Try using the settings recommeded here:

http://www.gamesprays.com/team-fortress-2/tutorial/creating-team-fortress-2-sprays/?var0=game-sprays&var1=tutorial&var2=creating-team-fortress-2-sprays

Everyone seems to suggest using a *.tga as your image file, so I would say try that.

I'm honestly not very good with making sprays. Try looking through a few tutorials and comparing the process, or asking someone with a custom spray if they can help you out with yours (Jasen and Joel are two names that come to mind).

Re: Need help with custom sprays - Versus - 05-15-2008

Yeah, .tga worked for me.

Re: Need help with custom sprays - Eschatos - 05-15-2008

I use .bmps.

Geoffesque sprays?

Re: Need help with custom sprays - Eschatos - 05-15-2008

I've expanded my repertoire beyond those, but yes.

Re: Need help with custom sprays - Vandamguy - 05-15-2008

i use a program called sprayR to make my images into .vtf's
it also supports making animated sprays
