Folding at Home with UMLan :) - IdiotWithGuns - 06-26-2008 This post is for all of you who idle their pcs just like me. I mean why not dedicate some of that idle time to Folding. http://folding.stanford.edu/ "What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery." We at UMLan been folding for some time now and i feel like we are acctually helping world to change. Our team statistic page is right here http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=47221 Our team number is 47221. So if you feel like helping out, join us Psst. Last time I installed Folding@Home it just crashed on my system hard everytime I tried running it. The hardware wasn't THAT bad either, but the mobo is a bit questionable. Perhaps it'll run better on my new rig. I'll give it another shot when I get home. Also, nice idea 8) I know a few folks who have PS3's, and - according to them - Folding is all they're good for. ;D Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - IdiotWithGuns - 06-26-2008 The new cell chip ps3 using is amaizing!!! It really does insane stuff. I used to run folding on my ps3 but my wife kicked my ass about electric bill being over 150$ already> <  Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - A. Crow - 06-26-2008 "protein folding is an entropy driven process, in a fully folded state entropy is maximized, lets examine this process quantitatively... <insert metric ass-tonne of math>" I fucking hated biophysics. Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - Vandamguy - 06-26-2008 im not one that leaves the computer on idle, but in support of this motion, ill mention that there will soon be available a new folding client that can use your nvidia 8x00 series and above GPU to fold. its about a lot more effective than using your CPU. That's another one of the 3 classes I've failed here Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - Budr - 06-27-2008 I signed up Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - Ceceil Felias - 06-29-2008 Once my system gets a decent cooling system, I'll likely get F@H running on it. Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - copulatingduck - 06-29-2008 For some reason, only the graphical client works on my machine. Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - IdiotWithGuns - 06-29-2008 You sure you configured the console properly? I had that problem too. Also had a problem with latest gpu client. :/ Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - copulatingduck - 06-29-2008 (06-29-2008, 10:36 AM)IdiotWithGuns link Wrote: You sure you configured the console properly? I take the "big job," they take longer to fold Also, upgrading my graphics card at some point, and then I'll really be doing something edit: nvm, looks like he's got the same strategy as me... slow and steady, wait for the big jobs for big points. I'll never catch up unless I start folding on the server and on my laptop, maybe even a few rigs at work (:< Also, want sexbawks client plz, I never use that carp anymorez. edit x2: Also, there's only 235 members. And they could make it easier to find the high-performance "beta" clients. Navigating stanford's site is a pain. Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - IdiotWithGuns - 07-07-2008 Yeah yeah, shut up and keep folding. By the way i am not folding on my server. You guys want me to? Then your Mod server gonna be hella of slower :-X Re: Folding at Home with UMLan :) - copulatingduck - 07-07-2008 (07-07-2008, 02:50 PM)IdiotWithGuns link Wrote: Yeah yeah, shut up and keep folding. Ehh, the Windows clients at least seem to do a great job of throttling themselves whenever another application needs the resources. But I was just kidding about setting it up on the server, the less things on there that might break it the better. If nothing else, at least I know that a games-server should have some stability. : |
