So I want to upgrade my PC, but... - hawtpawkithero - 07-09-2008

but my PC's motherboard only supports socket 939. Right now, i'm running on an opteron 180 (server processor, but it runs cool, so I have it overclocked to 2.2 GHz from 1.8). I was going to upgrade to a 9800 GX2 from my dual 7600GSs, a huge upgrade, but would the processor be holding me back? I'm just wondering if it would be worth upgrading just the video card, or going through with just building from scratch with a new mobo.

EDIT: This is the only processor I could find worth buying, but it's deactivated: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103608

Proc would definitely be holding you back.

How much you think? I was hoping I could get away with just buying a really high end video card, like a 9800 GX2, but how much of that performance do you think I'd be losing?

Also, what if I picked up an FX-60 with it. Would the processor still be an issue then?
Although I have no idea where to find an fx-60 anymore.. other than ebay, used.

Shit, I have a quadcore, and I'm not looking to get a 9800GX2. I think you should just build a new computer.

Dont bother with any processors that don't have at least 2 cores, those FX chips might be fast, but they are still single core. Id rather have 2 slightly slower cores than one really fast one.

To expound on what I said:

Even a mid-range dual-core processor would likely be your bottleneck with that card. As Caff said, dual-core should not even be a question anymore. For a 9800GTX you'd want to pick up a dual-core CPU a bit nicer than mid-range.

The FX-60 is Dual core :/

Most of the old FX chips were single core, and were ridiculously overpriced, given that dual core was the new wave

So would the fx-60 handle the 9800 GX2 then?
