No. Oil would be awful to run through coolers, and if you're thinking of the submerging your entire computer in oil, you're full of even more buckets of fail.

Did they run it through a cooler or do they cycle the fluid at all?  If not, it doesn't matter that oil doesn't conduct, if you do the thermal analysis (it's really not that hard) the steady-state temp of your computer would still likely be hotter than if it were convection cooled, depending on your case size. All the oil does is act like a big heatsink, you still need something to get rid of the heat. Sorry, but oil-cooling is just dumb, there are much better, more elegant solutions to cooling your system than oil.

But you can make french fries with the waste heat.

It doesn't matter how reliable it is. Caff would still end up having it fuck up and burn out everything he put in there. Usually through no fault of his own, just historically horrible horrible luck with new hardware Tongue

i am not actually suggesting oil cooling, it was more of a joke to me than anything else..

Re: Watercooling? - Ceceil Felias - 07-11-2008

Oil-submersion cooling is just retarded.

Fluorinert-submersion cooling is awesome and a classic.

I've personally been interested in looking into DIYing watercooling with my fulltower case, especially since it has plenty enough room to set up a full resevoir/radiator/pump combo above the power supply. My main concern is leakage, as I want a high-reliability system and leakage kinda defeats that. It's too bad fluorinert requires a lot of work to get. I mean a fuckton, wow.

Re: Watercooling? - IdiotWithGuns - 07-14-2008

You know, funny, i didnt say anything about oil or oil cooling.
Whats all the talk about oil cooling. I SAID WATER COOOLINNGGG!

I noticed something.  This forum likes to wonder around wayyy to much off subjects  ;D

Now that you mention it, what beer would be the best for cooling a PC, I would suggest some American Lite beer, as those aren't fit to drink anyway.

Re: Watercooling? - copulatingduck - 07-14-2008

Actually, I really could fry an egg on my XPS M1210. Just sitting on a desktop with something like say Folding running on a single core, the CPU/GPU both get up to ~85C (185F for us Americans). I have to prop the damn thing up on books, that usually manages to drop the temps 20-25C.
