Broken Mic Help - Eschatos - 09-11-2008

So recently my mic stopped working, and I have no idea why.  I see nothing wrong with the cable or headset and I have been treating it pretty decently. I hadn't used it for a few days but when I started a game of TF2 I got nothing.  When I plug in the mic I get the usual bit of static that signifies it working but I hear nothing over my speakers when I talk.  It's less than two months old and it is good enough quality to not fall apart quickly, or so I thought.  Any ideas on what might be wrong/how to fix it?  I haven't had the chance yet to test it with another computer but I see no reason why it would be any different.  The headphones part still works perfectly fine.

Test it in another computer.
Double check your connections.
Double check your settings, make sure the mic input is selected on the recording menu.

does it work in other apps? like sound recorder?

if not, have you tried fiddling around with the connection?

Something might have muted your mic input. I assume you've checked those settings, but you never know. Smile

Very possible, this was always my problem it turned out.  My Wave In setting kept got lowered a ton and I wasn't sure how.  Make sure you go to your Sounds and Audio Devices and check the volume for your audio recording device, the Wave In panel only appears here and not the normal sound panel for some reason.

Tried fixing it today.  There's nothing wrong with the settings, and it didn't work at all on another computer.  I have found that it sometimes works when I hold the wire a certain way.  It's really annoying though.

At what end?  The plug-in jack end or the entry point to the mic body?  I dunno how difficult it is to cut off the jack, strip the insulation and rewire a new one from Radio Shack.. is that possible?

Re: Broken Mic Help - Mission Difficult - 09-15-2008

Yeah. Basic soldering.

Re: Broken Mic Help - HeK - 09-15-2008

The cost of a new plug at Radio Shack may cost as much as a new mic.
Unless American RadioShacks don't rape you as much as Canadian ones do.

Re: Broken Mic Help - Mission Difficult - 09-15-2008

RadioShack may have been cool 10 years ago. Now it's pretty lame and expensive. I buy all my components online through various vendors.

Re: Broken Mic Help - Eschatos - 09-15-2008

I don't know shit about soldering, so unless it's cheap and easy I'll just get a new mic.

It's also more likely that there is a break in the cord. Finding it without an accurate time domain reflectometer* would be very difficult.
x2 for buying a new mic.

* - Yes, this is an actual tool. Yes, it is very expensive.
