Find the password. ;D

You have to be a 1337 h4x0r or something.  You can't get the password?  I think that the encryption method is fairly secure.

Usually the place you downloaded it from has the password listed somewhere, like in a comments section or something. I assume this is something you got off a torrent? Go back to the page of the torrent if you can find it. Other than that not sure what you can do, sorry.

Well done crumb-bum... If you're just going to post a smart-ass answer... well, just don't fucking post a smart-ass answer. Okay?

Thanks. <3

IT's the obvious answer! Look for the password where you downloaded it!

Re: winrar password protection - CaffeinePowered - 09-19-2008

Its very difficult to crack the password on the file, there are some programs that will attempt a dictionary based attack, but that could take days or weeks to crack. The best bet is to try to find the password on the file.

Re: winrar password protection - Fail Medic - 09-19-2008

Depending on where you downloaded it from, try the site name.  Did you get it from a Rapidshare?  If you got it off a BBS, can you search your browser history to see where you got it from to see if that thread is still alive?

Re: winrar password protection - Neonie - 09-19-2008

Honestly if you have a file that's password protected, and you don't know the password, then it's not meant to be cracked and it's probably a virus. My best advice to you would be delete the file immediately and try to get it from somewhere else.

Not always true, what many people will do when uploading stuff that tends to be 'copyrighted' or something else they want to keep private on rapidshare they will password it so if anyone that they don't want to downloads the file, no one can open it.

Re: winrar password protection - Mission Difficult - 09-19-2008

KRyLack Password Recovery. Uses a brute force or dictionary attack. Works on most archive file types, but good fucking luck if it's .ace 2.0.

Re: winrar password protection - HeK - 09-19-2008

There is also your friendly Russian programmer: http://www.elcomsoft.com/arpr.html
Zip files are quick to crack as they are case-insensitive and bruteforcing is quick.
Bruteforcing a RAR on the other hand... takes nearly 100,000 to 1,000,000 times longer.

i read his comment as sarcastic, dunno if it was supposed to be.

Re: winrar password protection - hawtpawkithero - 09-23-2008

wow.
Dude, just google the exact file name in quotes, like "some_file.rar". Usually, you'll find the site where it's posted, and the password should be close.

I bet you never tried my suggestion.
If you did, you would still be at it. It is guaranteed to work.... eventually.

Thats if you're lucky. With the overhead on RARs you'd be waiting more around 2 million...
