My AWESOME video setup. - ainmosni - 11-30-2008

People on IRC might have heard me bragging about my awesome new video setup so now I will brag a bit on here with pictures to boot.

So I've had access to this private site with a LOT of movies on it which also gave me enough speed to stream (HD and non-HD) the movies from there... I used to download them using firefox and watch the .part file so that I could watch while downloading... This worked fine but wasn't pretty and could be improved a lot.

Then I found this application called Plex, a Mac OS X application which is aimed to transform Mac OS X into a media center. The awesomeness came in when I found out I could link plex to the aforementioned site. When I added the movie directory to Plex it started to index all the movies and started to cross reference it with IMDB and make it like I was browsing a video store which I could directly watch.

So here is my tour.... (Click the pictures for the full sized pictures)

This is the main screen where you can choose if you want to watch movies, tv series, music.

This interface (and all other screens) can be used with the keyboard, the mouse, the apple remote, many other remotes and the ipod touch. It's tuned so that it's easy to navigate with any remote.

When you want to watch a movie it gives you a choice on the criteria you can browse them, I'm choosing to browse per genre for this demo.

It uses all the info it got from IMDB to sort all the movies so many movies will be in multiple genres.

After selecting the genre option you can choose what genre you want to watch.

After selecting a genre you can choose to browse your movies in quite a few ways, all of them aesthetically pleasing.

The list style:

The coverflow style:

The grid style:

The media preview style:

The artwork style:

After you found the movie you want to watch you just select it.

It starts to buffer.

And the movie plays.

As you can imagine this is impresses visitors quite a lot more than a directory listing of your movies or a random site...

Re: My AWESOME video setup. - HeK - 11-30-2008

Wow... it looks kinda like the OSX build of the Xbox Media Centre: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29133065@N05/

In fact, it looks almost identical.

It's a fork, they fixed a lot of stuff and improved indexing a _LOT_. I tried the xbmc port on OSX and windows and it didn't index the server worth shit...

Necro to bitch.  Holy crap, you're right, it is the pewps.  I was trying it 'cause I just set up a NAS with some films on it, and it's... I think the proper term is wretched.  Maybe I should give it more of a chance, but no lol.

lol, it's a bitch to set up because the interface is tuned for remotes/limited input devices... (I control it from my ipod touch)

Once set up properly it's bloody sweet though...

It's a private site which only people who work in the dutch IT branch have access to.

It's not a lie... it's a site where your IP gets added if you know the owner so it's very private...

Re: My AWESOME video setup. - copulatingduck - 12-30-2008

I'm guessing it's pretty common practice for IT guys. I know at the Media Lab there's the same sort of thing, and supposedly they have over 40TB of data (a lot of it is FLAC and the like). Supposedly you're not supposed to even know about it until you have access (one of the guys that has been working there for 5 years doesn't even know about it yet) but I overheard somebody getting the invite/explanation.  :-X

I had a friend that used to work at a best buy and in their tech department they had a media dump set up, ripped collections every time someone brought a PC in to get fixed.

About a year ago people at one got caught with something similar lot of people got into trouble.
