science question that is probably very obvious but took me a while to think of. - Dave - 12-08-2008

so i was on the bus today and the door was open and a fly flew in, it didnt touch any of the walls or anything and it just hovered in place, how come it didnt shoot to the back of the bus? like the bus was moving when the fly came in, and then the fly just like, gained the momentum of the bus, without touching it or anything, i thaught about air flow n shit, but i decided to delete that from my thaughts, since they arent what im thinking of, anyone understand what i mean? and can anyone explain what i saW?

Air. I think.

The fly is very light, so the air inside the bus prevents it from shooting backwards. Kinda like if you jumped into a moving tank of water or something.

I could be wrong.

Probably a combination of drag from the still moving air and the fly's momentum

i wonder the same thing when i throw something up in a car.

Well, when you are holding it, it has the traveling momentum of the car.  Otherwise, it would fly to the back of the car.  This is the same reason why you can get up and walk around in the car, because you too, along with the car, are moving.

Newton's First Law, bitch.

Dave... you used to teach "about air flow n shit", and you can't answer this one?

The air also moves with the bus. When the bus moves, it moves the air inside it as well, and the air thus gains the bus' momentum. When they fly flies inside of the bus, and the bus moves, the bus transfers energy to the air, which then transfers energy to the fly.

When the bus lurches foward, inertia will kick in and everything (including the fly and air) will kinda fly back a bit before the energy carries on throughout the system.

Bitches in art school know about his physics.

The weird thing is like, I'm half liberal arts, half art, so I can choose to go into like, business or law (I'm pretty fucking good with arguments and standing my logical ground) or something, but I can also just bullshit ideas out and do art.
