Portal problem. - KarthXLR - 12-20-2008

Ok, so everytime I try to start a new game in portal, hl2.exe crashes mid-load.

I've reinstalled, verified, and defragged, but it continues to happen.

This was after the new steam beta upgrade, but I haven't noticed anything else odd about my games.

(another thing strange, the chapter picture is different for a new game, it's a picture of a castle instead of anything portal-like. I haven't touched any portal files, so I have no clue what it is.)

problem fixed, thanks for help.

Re: Portal problem. - Fail Medic - 12-20-2008

Karth, are you sure you have ...

Wait.  Portal should be "standalone", i.e. if you don't have another Half-Life-ish game installed, it comes with its own Half-Life engine, right?

Karth, what Half-Life 2's do you have installed?  Are any of them now unplayable...?

Don't all these games like share a communal copy of the engine or something?

I have all of the orange box installed atm.

They all work like a charm. I can load anything past the first level in portal, just not the first level...it's weird.

I wonder what's special in the first level that's not in any other--

Dude.  It's probably the toilet.  The game's probably crapping out when trying to render it.  Might have to wipe your Portal install and flush it after all.

ALL of it?

Everything?

Complete reinstall?

not EVERYTHING.  Like Dave said, delete local content, probably delete the whole portal folder too, then reinstall Portal.

...

I don't suppose that "Verify local cache integrity whatever" option fixes stuff like this, would it?

Dunno.  Glad it works now, but sucks that there's naught to do but a reinstall.

Blame Steam, I do.
