College Compy - bjlsurfer - 01-10-2009 Hey, I'll be going to college this fall and I've been trying to decide what to do in terms of getting my own computer. I'm gonna wait til closer to when I leave to actually get one, but I don't even really know what to be looking for, so I thought I'd ask you guys. So for those of you with college experience, what would you suggest I look for? A 15" do-it-all laptop? A DIY desktop and a netbook or a tablet? I'm going to be using it for games, computer engineering work (whatever that entails), and maybe taking notes (may just do these pen and paper style... that's a whole other question for you guys). What has worked for you/what would you suggest given all the stuff that's available today? I can research specific models and stuff myself... mainly I'm just trying to decide on form factors, and I thought those of you who have done this stuff could lend me some advice on that front. Re: College Compy - Blues - 01-10-2009 A decent computer or laptop that can game will generally run a minimum of 800$. Usually something good is 1k$ or more. The smartest way to go is to buy a 200-300$ sale laptop for work, and build your own gaming computer for 500-600$. For that price you can buy a low/mid end machine and monitor, and overclock a bit putting you to mid/high end gaming. Of course, I'm a big fan of saying fuck laptops. You went through all your life doing work with pen and paper, why bother getting a laptop for college so you can look savvy. It's been proven that writing notes helps most people retain info better anyways, so write them and if you need organization type them up later on your PC imo. Buh buh buh bingo Re: College Compy - Vlambo - 01-10-2009 I'm in the same boat as you, going to uni in the fall, But I recently bought this new computer in November. I was thinking along the lines of a Netbook or possibly a cheap lappy. Re: College Compy - KorJax - 01-11-2009 I REALLY want an Eee PC (the ones with Windows and a REAL hard-drive, and with decent wireless) for college so I don't have to go to the computer room when I have nothing to do but type something or internet browse between classes (which is like, a 2 hour difference). REALLY REALLY BADLY. They look so sexy and small FUCK YES Re: College Compy - Honest - 01-11-2009 (01-11-2009, 12:06 AM)KorJax link Wrote: I REALLY want an Eee PC (the ones with Windows and a REAL hard-drive, and with decent wireless) for college so I don't have to go to the computer room when I have nothing to do but type something or internet browse between classes (which is like, a 2 hour difference). My brother just got his Eee 904HA for school. Nice laptop, I like the Atom proc, the larger capacity battery, higher resolution screen and the multi-touch of touchpad (the touchpad it's self isn't as good as others). Compared to my 701 it's much bigger and you really feel the slowness of the HDD. Too bad the SSD models carry such a premium, they work so well as ultra-portables.
