Laptop help? - Geoff - 01-30-2009 Guys, I need help finding a laptop. I don't want a new, fancy, high-end one, just one that can run moderately fast, surf internet, play music etc. Something that is old enough to be under a 100 bucks on ebay, used? halp specialists Re: Laptop help? - Mission Difficult - 01-30-2009 Save up a little and get an EEE. Re: Laptop help? - Geoff - 01-30-2009 Don't want something that small :x Re: Laptop help? - copulatingduck - 01-30-2009 (01-30-2009, 10:57 PM)Geoff link Wrote: Don't want something that small :x THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID Re: Laptop help? - Geoff - 01-30-2009 :\ thx for the help guys, considering I need to get this soon. Re: Laptop help? - copulatingduck - 01-30-2009 What is your for serious budget? Does it really have to be less than $100, because that is extremely tough. $400 or maybe $300 is possible though Re: Laptop help? - Geoff - 01-30-2009 (01-30-2009, 11:52 PM)CopulatingDuck link Wrote: What is your for serious budget? I'm not talking new, like a used 5 year old one. I just need to be able to play some goddamn music, write my homework, talk to my friends, and open up the sdk from time to time. Looking at this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=170298285500&Category=177&_trksid=p3907.m29&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2 Re: Laptop help? - Mission Difficult - 01-31-2009 I still think you should consider a triple e. See if you can't find one on display at a local store. The keyboard isn't as small as you might think and is easy enough to type on and a 10" screen is fine for what you're doing. I'm doing pretty much the same things that you listed with mine. One of the best 'puter purchases I've made. Re: Laptop help? - Wedge - 01-31-2009 An EEE is still gonna run close to $400, which is stupid if the computer is an occasional necessity and not a hobby. The most important thing is are you actually going to need to run this on battery, or will it be plugged in? Any laptop you can find from the last five years or so should be fine (minus maybe SDK stuff), but the problem with most is the batteries are going to be rubbish if they work at all. E-bay might work, and depending where you live you could be able to find something on Craigslist or something too. Also if you can find one, business models of laptops tend to be much more reliable than consumer models. Re: Laptop help? - HeK - 01-31-2009 Laptops are like cell phones, they don't last much longer then three years (with the odd exception). Batteries died quickly and flimsy cases cause flex in the system board, ultimately causing micro-fractures. Get either the cheapest Dell deal laptop, or a bottom model EEE. You can expect to spend ~$300. I wouldn't suggest anything else really, unless you get a good deal you will end up spending more in the long run on batteries or a replacement. Re: Laptop help? - Geoff - 01-31-2009 ehhh f it. Spent my money on a new hat, aviators, and caffeinated beverages. ;D Also pissed off the gamestop guy by playing an acoustic solo on the guitar hero controller. I'M BANNING YOU FROM THE STORE. Re: Laptop help? - Geoff - 02-01-2009 Yeah, I was on the floor and shit, while my friend was filming it. Re: Laptop help? - at0m - 02-17-2009 If you want a $100 computer, and plan on buying a used one, asking for help is retarded. What you get is entirely dependent on what someone is willing to sell it for, the best we'd be able to do is say Yes/No if you asked 'is this worth $100?' and posted links to eBay auctions or Craigslist ads. I bought a $100 laptop once, and it had a busted NIC and screen. And the battery was crap. After replacing everything that was broken and adding some more RAM to make it usable, it ended up costing $500, which I could've spent on a brand new one with much fewer problems and a fucking WARRANTY Re: Laptop help? - Blues - 02-17-2009 (02-17-2009, 05:27 PM)at0m link Wrote: If you want a $100 computer, and plan on buying a used one, asking for help is retarded. He's asking for help/info on buying a cheap laptop, which ISN'T retarded, so that he doesn't just go and buy one and get a busted piece of shit like you did, which IS retarded. Also, we can easily do better than that, by giving him specs to look for which I didn't do the first time because I just skimmed this and wasn't really thinking about it. You want something with a Pentium 4 cpu, 2.xGHz. You want at least 512MB RAM, 1GB or more if possible. Video card does not matter, you will never play any games on a 100$ laptop, except maybe doom. Make sure it has integrated wireless and an onboard nic so that you can plug in. Also make sure it comes with a battery. Of course, this thread is two weeks old, so he might not even still be looking for anything. |
