Boston Tea Party....2? - KarthXLR - 04-12-2009

So apparently, a group of anonymous have been phoning around trying to talk about creating a second "Boston Tea Party". It has to do with the government raising taxes, the phrase, "No taxation without representation." comes up.

Anyone else heard about this?

Alright, there have been literally dozens of "tea parties" held around America in the last few years for these same reasons. Nothin' special anymore unless they are able to dump so much tea it wipes out an ecosystem.

Local group forgot to get a permit, so they can't set up a PA system / stage where they are having it.  /facepalm

It's not anonymous (as Caff just pointed out before I could post). It's Neocons. Just listen to Hannity or Limbaugh for a day or two, they'll talk about it.

Re: Boston Tea Party....2? - Ianki - 04-12-2009

I haven't heard anyone adequately justify these protests without using the term socialism, so i'm not to sure what they are really protesting.

As far as i know, the new tax plan lowers income tax for the majority of the nation, while raising taxes on the upper one percent.  In particular there is a lot of weird disagreement with his decision to make the changes to the estate tax code under the last year of bush permanent, with republican thinking that the tax is too high, even though it explicitly exempts estates worth more than 7 million (do you think anyone at one of these events has a combined estate of 7 million or more?)  People are also mad that taxes for the wealthy will go back to Clinton era levels.  Oh my, a shock, the tax codes of a prosperous 8 years with a balanced budget is tantamount to socialism.

It's all weird, and comes down to "i don't want to pay taxes to support a country run by someone whose policies i disagree with".

even if the video is broken, I know what the shit taco is. +1.

aaand, most people, left or right, don't really give a shit about taxation without representation, or they would fix this:

Unlike residents of U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico or Guam, which also have non-voting delegates, citizens of the District of Columbia are subject to all U.S. federal taxes.[ In the financial year 2007, D.C. residents and businesses paid $20.4 billion in federal taxes; more than the taxes collected from 19 states and the highest federal taxes per capita. This situation has given rise to the use of the phrase "Taxation Without Representation" by those in favor of granting D.C. voting representation in the Congress. The slogan currently appears on the city's vehicle license plates.

Yes, for those counting at home, that is more revenue than over 1/3rd of our states, but with ZERO votes. Methinks "pro-teabaggers" ought to direct their false outrage in that direction before directing it to the Current president who is saddled with the debts of the PAST president.

You're exactly right. And that's all it boils down to.

the comedy central player is finicky

Re: Boston Tea Party....2? - Eschatos - 04-12-2009

What's this bullshit about "No taxation without representation"?  What the fuck do they think all their congressmen and senators are there for.  The one group that could legitimately complain are the D.C.ers.

Re: Boston Tea Party....2? - SAVAGE-0 - 04-13-2009

comedy central vid worked fine fo me Smile waas really good stuff... scary thing about it is how many people take it seriously... like the dude that shot 3 cops because apparently they were there, under authority of Obama's latest plan, to take away his guns.  Some things shouldn't be allowed to be called news.
