Anyone know anything about being homeless? - fyre - 04-30-2009
I'm considering leaving home and trying to survive with a combination of homeless shelters, bus stations, and odd jobs.
Is this possible? I'd appreciate any advice.

Second off always carry 4 quarters with you.

I think there was some guy at UC Berkley that tried it as a sociology experiment, and if I recall correctly it was one of those things that was a good experience but given the choice you would never want to do so again.

That's where my 4 quarters advice comes from and IIRC it was a professor that did it with volunteers from a class.

I was working, but I lost my job due to an absurd technicality. I was a pizza driver, but the pizza place's insurance company made a new rule that said drivers had to have their license for three years. I've had mine two and a half.
I obviously could get another job, but they are scarce in my area, and the idea of traveling across the country, starting from scratch has always appealed to me.

That's different than becoming homeless, the best bet is to find a friend that lives in an area you want to be in, then sleep on their couch until you get a few paychecks and can get your own place.

All of my friends that I know well enough to do that with are in the Great Lakes area, and I'd like to head west. And part of the reason I would do this is because I'm tired of being a parasite.

Looking at being homeless in a romantic sense is a stupid idea.
If you want to move to another place and get going in a new area, being truly homeless is a stupid way to do it. Get a job, ANY job, and save up until you have enough to get one month's rent somehwere, some travel expenses, and some food. Research where you want to go BEFORE you go and resist the urge to be stupid and just GO without knowing what you're getting into.
If you have enough money to do this already then do it. If you can borrow some to do it, then borrow some. But don't just go off with nothing in the middle of nowhere and expect it to work. If you go about life with stupid intentions you're going to get stupid results.

I'm in the same boat. No, you don't have to read Catcher to want to do this.
My advice: get a good reliable car and some gas money, by hook or by crook. Live out of that. Shelters are a bitch.
Read Wikihow. It has a bunch of articles on good homelessness. Also, Steal This Book has some good (now mostly obsolete) tips, but you can still read the wiki.
