Summary: A committee in the house has approved a bill called the Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011, which sounds perfectly reasonable. But what it really does is mandate that "information that commercial Internet providers are required to store to include customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses," which means anything and everything you do online is going to be stored by your ISP for a year and the police can use that information not just to protect children from having nudies taken of them, but for any investigation into any crime they want, and there's the possibility it could be used for civil disputes as well.

So not only would your credit card info, address, name, bank account, etc be stored for a year on a potentially vulnerable server open to attack to be published online, but your ability to anonymously brouse and post on the internet, your right to privacy, would be essentially gone. I urge you to contact your representatives, and the EFF has a easy to fill out form. If you want to mail a letter, fax a letter, or call I'm sure that would be very effective as well.

For non-Americans: Don't let this shit happen in your country because I'll probably go there when I can get out of this hellhole.

Mailed my rep using their form, I did add a personal message onto the bottom. Shit like this needs to be killed at every turn.

This is why Anonymous is organizing. Unfortunately, writing to your corrupt politicians won't do fuck all.

Misguided acts of narcissistic internet vigilantism aren't much more effective.

Calling is much more effective than sending mail, email or snail.

Although a collective who associate themselves as Anonymous are in fact #hacktivists, many of us are simple citizens of this world who will take to the streets in traditional displays of activism. However, the game has changed. Oppression and tyranny have become far too common in this world and we have risen to meet the occassion. Anonymous is everywhere. We are your neighbors, friends colleagues, relatives. We are your mailmen, barbers, store clerks and lawyers. In a world where corruption hides its' face around every corner, Anonymous is there to meet it with force.

The link in question doesn't even seem to pertain to this particular piece of legislature, it's just filled with anti-government and anti-corporation rhetoric. While it's nice to see that Anonymous's intentions are more passive and self-conscious then their past actions (which is what has garnered my distaste for them), I still cannot place any stock in an entity that by its nature cannot be held accountable for its actions. But thanks, now I've spent 20 minutes browsing the website to make sure I haven't overlooked anything :\

This is pretty fantastic, they have a bill that they can effectively label any opposition as 'pro-child pornography'.

Internet neutrality is key, so I'm doing this too.

Bills like this are exactly why so called "net neutrality" is a bad thing. Put's too much power in the hands of unelected bureaucrats

Why can't the democrats name bills like this? We could have had single-payer if we called it the "Freedom and American Flags For All" act.

The Congresspeople need to be reminded that their ISPs would hold THEIR information as well. Point out where it will fuck things up for them, not just us. That'll make em think more.

Don't you remember the patriot act? Where you were un-patriotic and against America and loved terrorism if you didn't jump up and down and get excited over giving unilateral powers to authority to unconstitutionally invade your home?

Oh so that's where I've seen this before.

Also, I'm unpatriotic as it is. [/straightfromtheunderground]

I guess the simplest difference is that the Patriot Act gave the government the legal permission to invade your privacy, while this act would make it a legal necessity for ISPs to invade your privacy so the government doesn't have to do it themselves.

Even if the government never uses this information except for suspected predators and related cases, it would still set a precedent for other legislation that isn't so specific.

Oh yeah, and that whole issue of constitutionality, but that never stopped anyone.

Having been on the receiving end of these types of letters, I distrust form letters.

If you can, write a direct (unmediated) personal e-mail or letter
