Also E3 is stupid.  I'd rather people just announce things about their games when they feel like it, then have to sift through all the crap at a giant press event.  Thanks to the magic of the internets and gaming blogs, I don't think these big gaming expos are really needed anymore.

Well sir, you'd be WRONG. Big events like these are where all a company's games are exhibited. You only really hear about the big ones over the course of a year. Here is where you get info on anything, from the next big blockbuster to the cult favorite.

Plus, these act as strong communication channels between companies, as prejudgment for a given property, as a way to get this all in one go (instead of everyone holding their own separate press event, increasing costs, causing potential conflicts, and creating the possibility that newsstands may abandon a venue), and as a hell of a way to relieve stress for everyone in the industry.

You couldn't be more "WRONG".  The only thing that gets reported out of this event is the biggest publishers that would have been reported on anyways.  Even if if anyone else is there, they will just be drowned out, because the focus will go to the one's everyone is looking for.  The best chance for lesser known games is to get picked up by blogs and word of mouth when everyone ISN'T paying attention to something like this.  And it's not like they need an event for this kind of thing, developers hold session with press to play preview builds of their games all the time anyways these days.  Finally that you suggest this is a way to "relieve stress" for the industry is absurd, as developers have tons of pressure put on them to waste development time getting together special demo builds to display for the event.

Jesus, just how WRONG can you possibly be? E3 is the pinnacle of video game reporting. A beacon in the dark lighting the way between the Game Developers' Conference and the Tokyo Game Show. Everyone looks to this epoch for everything they could ever know about a game in development. It doesn't matter how many blogs or videos or long disseminations one puts out on the internet about their game; the simple fact is that it can't be completely explained by developers who have their own view about their games, it must instead be experienced by everyone else to make it a complete product. E3 accomplishes that by bringing every individual in the industry (and those outside who sneak into the event) to put whatever they have to the test.

The gaming world lost something when E3 died. I don't even believe in the next generation any more, and a good bit of that comes from the loss of communication that occurred with E3, in ends yielding much less impressive games the following year. It's a necessity, whether you believe it or not, and a damn good one at that too.

GDC, Leipzig, and TGS are where it's at.  This years E3 was crap.  There was a pretty good analysis of why in the Destructoid podcast about E3.
