A hobobuild is a computer which is made from the lowest grade parts and run something like a small linux distro. My friends have a tendency to make these occasionally. The very best one I have seen, was on /g/ and ran a bit lower than 50$.
And so I chellenge you BRBu, to build a hobobuild. Rules: Only new items, no ebay, or craigslist, or anything. Shipping cost is not included Must be able to run something (anything really) This is just the vital stuff to make a working system, price generally does not include peripheral. Hints: Don't use a HDD. Instead use a USB flash drive. A CD drive is not vital. Embedded Atoms are good processor canidates. Make your own case out of cardboard. Good luck soldiers!

Hmm... this interests me. Might take a few months to gather parts around Ottawa though.

my friend is building one and all the parts he needs are apparently extremely popular among the people who make these.
real talk though, I have an Atari 65XE at work that has 65,536 bytes of RAM |

Depending on the application of the box as well, could look into IDE > Flash Card converters. As long as once the box is set up/installed and files won't be modified too often (Firewall box, or similar) the write limitations of the flash card is totally negated.

While not exacly the cheapest thing I can find so far, I acutally am currently at 85$ with a micro-ITX board and an Atom. If I can get a similar set up at a cheaper price, I should put it in a shoe box.

What exactly would these little guys be used for?
I'm looking for some practical or entertaining applications here. |
