Since we don't want to muck up the other threads with said political debate, let's corral it here.

I'll start it by responding to the video of the congressman screaming.

I'm glad that the republicans voted to block that funding. There's no reason my tax dollars should be spent paying for the NYPD and the FDNY's medical bills. NYC should be paying those.

I just figure if we can spend $20 billion on air conditioning while we play Spaceballs for ~10 years, we can afford to give some money to the people who risked their lives responding to the worst terrorist attack on US soil ever.

First off, I'd like to mention that I loathe political debate and avoid it when I can. That being said...

I gotta disagree with that idea Dtrain. A similar strain of logic would dictate that no federal aid be given to, for sake of example, New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

From what I gather, the amount we're talking about here isn't terribly consequential for the government, and I don't think anyone would doubt the valor of those involved in the tragedy, so I feel this is more a matter of compassion.

I'm not saying that it's not a worthy cause. And i'm not trying to take anything away from the FDNY/NYPD, It's just not the federal government's job.

Katrina is a different issue however, it affected vital infrastructure and interstate commerce. Regulating interstate commerse is one of the legislatures primary jobs.

The NYPD/FDNY payments are just an attempt to shift the financial burden from NYC to the rest of the country. It was just cloaked in the veil of "OMG, the Republican's hate the FDNY!"

But weren't they casualties of war? I mean this is a war right? They may not be official enlistees but they suffered due to their role against enemy combatants.
