So heres the dealio.. Im moving to Japan, aand I really want a nice camera, one that takes seaxy photos. Problem is, I know jack shit about good cameras. Yeah I have a pont n' shoot but its time for something better. Someone I know did recommended the Nikon D3100 saying its a good starter camera bla bla.. I may just end up going with that, idk. So I was just wondering if anyone here knows a good thing or two about DSLRs, where I should start out, what to look for/avoud etc.. tnks

DSLRs are quite an investment. Lots you need to know to make an informed purchase decision.

Remember to ask yourself, do you really want an SLR? They are big and expensive.
High-end point-and-shoots will perform very closely to entry-level SLRs, fit in your pocket and are easier to use.

If you are still interested in looking at the dSLR route, start buy reading this: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/9566705...igital-slr

Casual photographer here.
I agree with everything HeK just said. If you're willing to carry around a big and heavy DSLR, then by all means get an entry level one. They are really neat to play around with compared to pas cameras.
I think the one big advantage to getting a dslr would be the ability to change the lens.
There are some really high-end pas cameras out there though. I recommend the Canon powershot s100 since it's one of the only recent pas cameras that I've used. It's a bit pricey though, looking at the Amazon prices.

It's hard for me to decide on a camera based on online reviews alone so I recommend going to a camera shop, or even a local best buy since they have a tiny collection of dslrs (like two lol), and just test out various brands and models.
