Finished the game a couple days ago, here's what I thought:

3 AM Review of Max Payne 3:
Rockstar has managed to make a game that  takes risks with its story while trying not to ruin its core appeal in gameplay. The story is told well and poorly at the same time. For example, Max Payne is written near-flawlessly; All his dialogue is just about perfect. But he feels really shoehorned into the story. If he's trying to overcome his alcoholism, how come he can still shoot so amazingly? Seems like the booze isn't hurting him that much. To be honest, you could have really put about any character in his place and you wouldn't really notice, which I find disappointing. The shootey-bits are good and polished, but they get repetitive after a while. Aside from different weapons the gameplay really doesn't change-up much. Is it weird that I kind of wanted a call of duty vibe from this game, with a little more craziness going on? It seems the action wants to do it but keep the game down-to-earth. I haven't played multiplayer much, but I haven't liked it much from what I have played.

I'd say play the first 2 games, and then decide if you'd be willing to shell out $60 for solely gameplay.

Oh, and Hard mode is such bullshit. Just play it normal.

Pretty sure after he stops drinking and the initial hangover the screen glitches become much less frequent. To have his alcoholism hamper gameplay would have turned you into a gimp for at least half the game.

I don't know about the story. Seems like one gigantic mess to me. As if they were writing it as they went along. The major turning point in the plot wasn't really hit home. Maybe there wasn't enough build up to it.

If you ask me, the main flaw is what seems like HOURS of cutscenes and the inability to skip them. Taking control away from a player is a great way to kill any momentum a game has going on. And wandering through the favela at a snails pace? FUCK THAT SHIT. Sure it's a great way to observe the art in the game, but fuck off.

Controls are a bit clunky which is why multiplayer will suck at first. After you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun. I don't see it lasting that long, even with all the different game modes. Some of them are pretty fun, Payne Killer being the first that comes to mind. Hackers tend to ruin it though. If you see one email maxpayne3.banhammer@rockstargames.com and tell them about it. I like the idea of forcing them all the play together, but they seem to be having a terrible time catching them.

The art in the game is really well done. Animations are really fluid and the textures are nice. Sound is a bit underwhelming but still well done. I do like that in the million cutscenes I had to watch, Max was always carrying the guns I had equipped, being that most of them are rendered real time. What I hated was how the game would switch to your pistol or whatever for the sake of the fucking cutscene and then leave it, so if there happened to be any amount of action immediately after, you would have to make an effort to switch back to whatever you had previously.

If you enjoyed MP1 and 2 you might like this. It's really not the best gauge. Aside from the fact that all three games are third person shooters with bullet time and the same character, they don't hold much in common. If you liked 1, you will love 2. 3 is a toss up though.

This game could have used a quick save/load feature like the first two. Of course that might have permitted you to die and respawn without watching one of their fucking cutscenes, which seems to be the goal rockstar was going for.

Well good job rockstar, mission accomplished.

I actually really liked the cinematics, but I agree that they took way too much control over the gameplay. It's very stylized.

Don't get me wrong, I was blown away the first time I played through. But it turned the second and third plays into grinds. Not to mention there is NO reason to have them in time and score attack modes.
