About a week ago I suffered a power outage in my apartment. When the power came on, my macbook refused to connect to the internet. I later found out that my airport keeps making a self-assigned IP that doesn't match my modem's, and I can't find a permanent solution to fixing this. Help?

Not entirely sure for a macbook, but somewhere in your config you should be able to tell it to automatically get an IP rather than have a fixed one.

Could this be the issue? Its trying to force an IP that wont work?

Try turning everything off.

Then, in order, power on your modem (is it cable or DSL?)
Wait 3-5 minutes.

Power on your router/gateway/Airport. (if you have multiple devices, such as a router and an airport. Power each individually)
Wait 3-5 minutes.

Power on computer.
See if you are able to get an address then.

Yeah, it's trying to force an IP instead of accepting one. I have it set to automatic. It'll do that for every other wifi on the planet except mine.

I tried that. It worked for about an hour.

Sounds like either your DHCP server is dying (on router/airport) or your laptop is otherwise reassigning the interface address.
Do you have another device which works on your Airport which can be used for quick troubleshooting?

My old pc laptop. It's a new router, so I don't believe it's that.

So it's set to automatic and what address is it retrieving from your DHCP server?

I'm going to assume that you've got the standard home network setup and you should be getting a 192.168 address

I'm not sure what the unix command for a dhcp release and renew is, I would try that and see what happens.
I'm gathering that your computer isn't communicating with the dhcp server.

What happens when you try to connect to another wireless access point with your computer?
What happens when you try to connect another computer to the access point you're having problems with?

You gather correctly. I haven't had any issues connecting to another wi-fi, and I can connect my PC to my home network.
