Thanks a lot, everyone! I'll try to keep a lot of this in mind when I play. I'll certainly set aside some time to check out those demos Caff posted. And to respond to a few specific ones...

(02-09-2011, 12:01 AM)K2 link Wrote: In my opinion, the absolute most important part of playing Heavy is awareness. Knowing when to spin up/down, when to retreat, who you should shoot first, etc. One specific thing to work on is paying attention to when people are flanking you. I feel there have been too many times recently that I'd get behind you as a Scout and you wouldn't notice me fast enough.

Yeah, this is something huge to me. I think I've improved a fair bit on awareness (not getting killed by spies as much and even killing them sometimes are nice signs of that, I'd figure), but I know there's a lot more to work on there. You're one of the first people that come to mind when I think of those who always kill me, by the way!

Some great advice I can give for heavy is this: Be a coward.

By that, I mean don't ever rush with him, sure, 300 health seems like a ton, but due to your girth, you don't dodge much, and are focus fired religiously. If you find yourself down like 100 health after an encounter, turn tail and run, no shame in it. And try to avoid open areas whenever possible, corner jumps are your friends, first and foremost.

I've actually been working corner jumps into my Heavy play in the past month or so, and it's certainly showing nice results, so definitely good advice. And knowing when to run away...yeah, that's something I can do better on. I know I'm an easy target, but I guess I just have trouble sometimes pinpointing the best time to run. I've had many a time where I've turned the corner, thinking I'm safe...only to be killed at the very last possible moment before my escape. Argh, frustrating. But I guess it's best to not even let it get so close to that point.

Aiming with the Heavy is simple.  The hardest part is picking your engagements and knowing before you commit whether you can win or not.  Almost every time with a heavy you should be able to predict the outcome (minus crits) to a reasonable degree of accuracy before doing anything.  Then there's the occasional dumb luck with sniper heavy.

Yeah, been working on this more, I think I'm getting better at it, but need to be more consistent with this.

(02-09-2011, 04:47 AM)Didzo link Wrote: Form long, lasting relationships with medics.

I accomplish this through the liberal use of sammiches and yelling derogatory things at them when they die and giving them mild positive reinforcement when they help me not die and kill things.

Ah, if only I had more free use of my microphone! Really though, I've been working on this, too. I've seen some incredible results with pocket medics before, so this is quite important to me.

Quote:Karrde link=topic=5439.msg195817#msg195817 date=1297279138]
Oh, also, remember that in a heavy vs heavy fight, the winner is almost ALWAYS the one who shoots first.  If a Medic is healing the other Heavy, it's an issue of range.  Medium-Close it's whoever shoots first, but at range the healed Heavy has the advantage.

Also, make sure to roll GRU or Fists of Steel.  They give you a huge escape advantage.  Heavies are killers, but they also must be cowards when they realize they're going to lose a fight.  Run like hell Tongue  Sometimes there's no escape.  You'll hear me say "Well, I'm dead" seconds before it happens.  It's because I know exactly how it's gonna play out and there's nothing I can do Tongue  What else?  Jump a lot and do 180s to make it harder on snipers and spies.  Also, a competent soldier is your worst enemy.  Especially if they have something to hide behind.  Don't try to out shoot them.  Either charge them down or fall back because it's easy to pop shot a heavy from around a corner.

Medics and range...I should have realized how much an impact those two have when together, really. This is something I think I can put to immediate use, much appreciated! And I do use the GRU, but I probably could use them for escaping more. I think I usually just use them for the sake of speeding towards a point or cart or something from spawn. I guess I just need to make it more of a habit to use to run away. I think I just let myself get too scared of that -6 a second to realize how much more damage I'm taking without unleashing the GRU in times of danger.

I'll comment on more later. Thanks again, guys!

I don't remember the hack in TFC, but someone in the twilight of the game's lifecycle wrote a really really good hack, but made it a honey pot that phoned home after a certain calender date, caught a bunch of people in comp play.

There were a lot of borderline people who you could never class between "they're just really really good" and "hacking", turns out a good portion of them hacked :/

Fixed for terminology, cheaters are not hackers. My biggest complaint about CS players, and their poisoning of the rest of the world.

Wouldn't it still fall under "hacking" though? As it is the game files they're messing with. It's kinda like one of them there Venn diagrams. All cheaters are hackers, but not all hackers are cheaters.

^ This

I got away with it for like 4 seasons in CAL-im and 2 in CAL-m

If you stay far, far away from aimbots and aren't retarded about making pre-shots around corners, it was simple to pull off. Just had to keep in mind what was "invisible" and kept my camera where it normally would be, not looking around through walls everywhere.

Running a pre-made script/application or cheating doesn't show up once. Hackers are generally enthusiasts in one way or another. Cheaters aren't enthusiastic of anything.

Back on helping TOH:

Don't ever expect a medic to stick to you as a heavy. Sure, in pub games, you will have that silly medic who think he'll be usefull keeping his beam on you, but on higher level of play, you'll almost never see that.

As for improving your gameplay in general, the best tip I can give is to play every class there is out there and to try and be decent at every one of them. That way, you will learn the strength and weekness of every class and you'll know when to engage, when not to engage, how to engage properly, and how to react when engaged.

TF2 is a lot about positionning too, so you have to learn how to get an advantage in a fight (soldier vs soldier, the one with higher ground will win; a scout against *anything*, the scout will mostly like open areas rather than closed corridors.) With more experience, you will also learn to use the terrain to your advantage a lot. This is actually somthing I really like about this game: it's OK not to be able to hit meatshots perfectly as a scout, or to miss 90% of your headshots attempts as a sniper, or to miss most airblasts, or to be unable to hit your targets with grenades all the time. As long as you know where to be, when to be there and what to do when you're there, you can get an advantage that can overcome your lack of skills.

Obviously, the next step will be to get those perfect shots, but I suggest working on this ^ first.

always, always, always.

if you see a soldier on higher ground, gtfo or rocket jump in the air so he cant hit you (a smart soldier would find the trajectory of where he will fall, and juggle him low on the ground for easy kill)
i fucking hate scouts in an open area. im looking at you, backfire

anyways, benito is pretty much right about this one. know where to be at the right times, and know how to counter such places if you were to be found in the enemies place
