It seems to me that in the course we're trying to take to repair this, we're going in a blatently problematic direction. Focusing more on R+D like we've been trying isn't helping us any. It's all too common a pitch for a candidate to say that we need more undergrad degrees floating around, and it gets us nowhere. Firstly, it devalues the degree itself, and secondly, we wouldn't have hands on deck to do the work that matters. Encouraging domestic industry and pressuring private businesses to put less stock on college degrees (and even high school diplomas) would help us immensely. Seems we want even our factory workers to be college-educated these days. It's ludicrous.
