The lulz thread had a head start. This here longest thread was only created after peoples got their panties in a bunch about random stuff appearing in a other threads.

Rummy you being the forum librarian I feel bad correcting you but the true history of the longest thread is as follows.

Spore started a pretty amusing thread that simply stated last to post wins. Once the "I win" jokes stopped being funny people started using it to shoot the shit and all was good in the forums. Scotty had it in for the thread from the beginning however saying that it was a waste of space and encouraged people to spam. Although I thought it might be trickery to win. He locked it with his post being last possibly confirming my suspicions after which I made a thread expressing my disapproval since it had become one of my favorite threads. Of course he edited my post to make himself seem even more awesome. I had plotted to resurrect the thread ever since and tried to make deals with him regularly for a new longest thread. He wanted any BS thread to be called "The Bar" like Dtoid and I said that was the worst idea ever since a lot of the members hated Dtoid at the time (see Rummy's history post). Eventually he got sick of my whining and let me create a new longest thread providing I didn't use Spore's starter "last post wins." Unfortunately without that little bit of genius this thread has never caught on as well. But I still think that there should be a thread that just posting in makes you feel like a winner.

You need to account statistically for variations between posting rates of the threads on a daily/weekly/monthly basis and not just linear averages...

nah.  i'm willing to bet that if you plot #post by day for each of these threads and fit a line to them, that line will be linear.

smoothing out variations across days/ # of members is exactly what averaging is doing.
