It's legit, he purchased WinVista. I can't help with this, had the same bullshit issues the one time I tried to install Vista on a comp I built for someone, took me like 2 hours to get it to finally boot up properly and let me install. Figured it was just because I had a pirated copy, LOLGUESSNOT.
