Ports are all forwarded properly.

A weird thing that I noticed that I've never seen before is that when a game starts or a new map loads, my ping starts at 40.  Then it steadily climbs as people join and the game starts until it hits 100-110.

It's getting really frustrating, because it's throwing my sniping game off completely.

I ran tracert, this is what I got.  I don't know what it means, so I can't interpret it.  I'm assuming the timeout on #7 is bad.

We have a 6mb/s connection, yet my dad gets mad when he only gets around 700-725 KB/s download...I have to explain this to him at least once every couple weeks...

Ummmm, you shouldn't have to forward ports to play TF2... Just if you want to host a server I thought.

Certain routers have trouble. Mine will regularly hit time out disconnections if not forwarded.

So, I have the new computer up.   Everything is awesome, it's running great and I'm getting like 100+ FPS most of the time.  The only problem I'm having is that this computer seems to have a higher ping than my old laptop did; I used to get around 70ish on the main server, now I'm pinging above 100.  It's not a HUGE deal, since it's still in a relatively reasonable range, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to lower it.  I tried opening a QoS on the router but it didn't really change anything.  I'm not sure why this is happening since nothing's changed about my internet connection; I'm assuming it's something with Vista, but I'm not sure what.

Stop downloading so much porn.

Especially if you have a dlink router, those things are crap.

try plugging directly into the modem instead? i dunno, anything's possible...

seems like there are a few bottlenecks in between you and the server 8.12.20.112 (specifically between hop 14 and 18)
i dont think anything on your end is the problem
wireless g is 54 mb/s
you will never get close to that in download speed prlly
the bigger problem with wireless is dropped packets
you will almost never see dropped packets on a wired connection unless you run your power bundled with your data.

as you can see, the beginning is about the same, its in the middle that are all your hops from your ISP and such.
you should run this
ping -t  192.168.16.1 (im assuming is your access point or wireless router)
from where you normally game, etc.
see how many pings are low counts and how many are time outs/ high counts
if you get a lot of time outs, then you need to consider wiring up for high bandwidth stuff.
to stop the pings hold control and press c

maybe try the trace at different times of the day, its possible that you preformed the test at a high traffic time, or something happened that brought a  path down
shit happens, my whole city was experiencing very slow download for about a day a couple weeks ago...
