Versus is saying that terrorism != nazism, in the fact that terrorism works underground (al-queda) and nazism was the belief that the vast majority of Germans had during ww2. The citizens of Germany believed what Hitler was telling them, that's how he became so popular. Osama had a network to run terrorist acts, its not like everyone in afghanistan believed he was fighting the good fight. That's how they are different.

As a practical matter, Bin Laden getting whacked doesn't change a whole lot. However, as a symbol, this is huge. The very poster child for Islamic terrorism just took a bullet to the head by the Red, White, and Blue. I think it will go a long way to bring the country back together. The United States is like a huge angry dysfunctional family. We may not get along, half time time we can stand each other. But if someone from outside the "family" messes with us, all the name calling, fist fighting, and hair pulling stops. After last week, the asshole who messed with the family got what was coming to him. It's natural that there's going to be some celebrating.

I just hope that a movement spawns from this to dismantle the police state that has risen since 9/11.

edit, because I'm sure it will be necessary: I support our troops all the way, my heart goes out to all my friends and family that are currently deployed. There's a difference between supporting troops, supporting a war, and supporting how a war is handled/funded. I would hope everyone understands the differences.

As a practical matter I think the only thing that will change much is Obama's approval ratings, both short and long-term.

That's the thing. The govt. probably wants everyone to know we took him out. Be it for Obama's political rating/stature amongst the nations/proving points/ect. Why else would he make a big fucking announcement about it?

Now the real question for me is how Pakistan takes this news. The fact that we pulled a huge (in size) mission in their territory and it was made extremely public. Going to be an interesting month.
