Is the starting salary for self-taught as high anymore?

http://www.businessinsider.com/startups-...enn-2012-5

and I said "to be a $70,000 a year programmer." Not necessarily start there (although it's possible to start there, and it's possible to achieve much, much higher. I'm a conservative estimator). And, I don't know about you, but that's quite a respectable salary for many people that I've known.

We all know zane's true calling is pornography and weight lifting. His signature move would be (currently is) simultaneously front-squatting and eating a girl.

Dear matter11,

I would appreciate it, when someone is offering assistance to another BRBu member, if you didn't do the following:

1) ask for a [citation needed] to back up a claim
2) Then, when someone responds to your request for [citation needed], you pivot to make a weak lowbrow joke at the expense at the person asking for help.

doing 1) makes you look like you are trying to vet the information for the benefit of the asker, which is good.

doing 2) makes you look like a opportunistic jokerster, which is fine by me.

doing BOTH (1) then (2) in rapid succession, makes you look like a troll.

With sincere regards,
rumsfald

I appreciate the advice. I also did ask the original question out of curiosity as I didn't think the industry was still that open to non-graduates. I didn't ask the first question with the second remark in mind. I just remembered the previous conversation on jobs in the porn industry and tied that into the only characteristic of zane I've really gathered. The front squat image at least made me chuckle :/

Kinda makes me want to go back to school to get my BS but that will put me 20k dollars in debt 2-4 years down the road with a ~slightly~ better chance at getting a job in my field. I dunno yet I still have to make some decisions. If anyone has any insight into the matter, I would appreciate if you shared.

The statistics on long-term earning potential continues to show a divide in favor of those with college degrees vs. those who do not.

That said, two caveats apply.
1) depends on your major, as art degrees, soft-social science degrees, and underwater basket weaving tend to underperform, for obvious reasons.

and

2) most of this data is pre-internet. We are witnessing the rise of Programming/Coding as an elite profession on-par with law/medicine/MBAs, one can develop ability to be a great Programmer without a BA.

I've said this before, if you want to write your own ticket, learn to be a hacker. Start reading news.ycombinator.com daily. Find a language and learn it. Take classes at Khan Academy. Look for open source projects on github to contribute to. Most IT startups these days will request your github profile in lieu of a resume. If you've got the brain for logic, and the motivation to dedicating yourself to teaching yourself to code after-work for 2 years, all of the education one needs to develop the skills to be a $70,000 a year programmer are available free online.

[/quote]

I should have taken your advice more seriously last time as far as the programming goes rummy, cause damn if i'm not seeing 1:10 ratio on "help desk" to "software engineer" jobs on monster right now. I never really noticed it the last time I was looking for work but it's sticking out to me now.

For everyone else that was asking, I currently hold an Associates of Applied Science for IT - Network Support and I would be going for a Bachelors of Science for Information and Communication Technology. It's rather relevant and I think it would help me get a position, as well as the possible internships via networking through the school. As it stands now I think I'm turned down quite a bit because I hold a 2 year degree with about 4 months of relevant (technical) experience.

I'll have to do some research on what languages are currently relevant, but it's been something I'm interested in.

I thank you again for the great advice rummy, I hope that one day I can be balling as out of control you are.

But regardless, I'm torn with the trailers. Looks beautiful, but I don't like any of the director's previous work.  :-\

both a FML and made my day:

Someone got ahold of my credit card information;  they tried to buy a $600 worth of crap at walmart in new hampshire last night.  Bank declined it and locked my card down immediately.  But I'll be without a card for 7 days.

When I first heard about this, I was excited. Then I saw that Tobey Fucking Macguire was cast as Nick Carraway. I'd be happier if it were codirected by Uwe Boll and Michael Bay

The two of them should co-direct Transformers The Game: The Movie

I made an obscure reference. Then felt compelled to find it on youtube. It's as good as I remember it, so I share:

Anyone looking forward to Confederacy of Dunces with Zach Galiafanakis?  I have low expectations but it could always end up amazing.

I remember reading this book. The casting choice is good for the character, but there are just so many things that could go wrong.

You guys discussing car collisions in the other thread reminded me of an almost accident I saw the other day that was rage inducing for me.

Was driving down the road, and stopped at a red light.  A couple cars ahead, I notice some fucktard trying to make a left-hand turn through three lanes of traffic.  A fucking blind left turn.  There's no way they could have seen either way up the street because of all the cars blocking their view.  Anyway, the 'nice people' who let this moron through almost got her killed.  The light had cycled, and the turn lane had the left arrow, so the SUV coming down wasn't expecting to have to make a sudden stop.  If she had pulled out a second or two later she would have gotten t-boned by a larger car going at least 30 mph.

Why the fuck are people so dumb?
