All I know for certain at this point is A blade broke off, but I haven't located said blade yet. And I refuse to boot my PC till I do

I was gonna say try super-gluing the blade(s) back on and see what the temp sensor in the BIOS shows it idling at.

Unless you can balance it perfectly, I would not attempt. CPU fans spin from 1800 to 4000 rpm and in some cases, more.
Without balance there is a lot of vibration. This will stress the heat sink and the CPU, more so,  the pins and carriage.

Since most people install an aftermarket CPU cooler when they build a PC, there are tons of stock coolers floating around. Cheap if not free.

I'll throw this out there.


When I was blowing out my Core2Duo HP laptop with the nitrogen hose at work one day, the metal pick I was using to halt the fan slipped out of my fingers slightly and allowed the fan to start spinning... quite rapidly what with being hit with 100 PSI. The pick slipped back into the fan and promptly busted one of the blades partially off (laptops use a centrifugal fan because of space constraints), imagine a T for the fan blade, the post of the T got broken off, so the 'top' of the T was all that was left. I saved the fan just in case I could find a use for it later on down the road.

That fan now is a solder-fume sucker sitting on my desk at work, all that I needed to do was carefully shear off a matching amount of material from the opposite blade, and it's perfectly balanced again and runs for ~6 hours a day for the past many months.



tl;dr

If you break off the the same amount on the opposing blade of the fan it will be re-balanced, I wouldn't go playing any games anymore because of the reduced airflow, but it should be more than enough for cooling the CPU with low-load.

Just make sure to power the fan on while it not attached to anything in the computer - hold it in your hand when it's on, you can feel if it's properly balanced or not, vibrations are bad juju for a CPU socket.

WELP. Being the idiot I am. I decided I'd start this sucker up after locating the missing blade. (Bad idea number one)
And after seeing no problems after 2 minutes I decided I'd just go back to normal use (Bad idea number two)
about 5 minutes into getting it set back up I'm noticing my desk is shaking, I decide this is just something I'll have to deal with from here on out. (Bad idea number three.)

On minute six my PC makes this ungodly roar akin to the scenes in the action movies when the helicopter gets shot down and the blades go everyfuckingwhere and on unplugging my PC I notice a red light inside the case.

*writes "DEAD" on the case*

You were right At0m, I was wrong. You have no idea how often I say sentences like that...

I'm gonna watch Robocop on my laptop for the umpteenth time...
