Purple w/gold trim were the Children of the Cathedral, they followed the Master and were the 'human' face on the mutant army's operations in SoCal. The blue or brown robes were worn by Brotherhood of Steel elders/scholars/librarians, they would go out on patrol with brotherhood members who wore power armor to scavenge useful tech and ancient knowledge.
