So we have around 9 very large reflow ovens at my work, they're they type of oven that electronics that have surface mount components go through. (Like the GPU on your video card, or the RAM chips, etc. etc.


This past week, we decided to fire up the single oven that we have in my dept after it's been out of use for about a decade, it's original problem was a blown fuse, it was simply taken out of use because we have so many more and they suck up a vast amount of electricity.

Me and a guy named Jeff started stripping it down to clean and trace whatever was blowing the fuse, and well, we sure found the source...





That's a small pile of Hershey's Kisses that must have been stashed by a mouse, they grey metal that everything is sitting on in the picture is the top of the heating chamber in the oven, the white blocks with the bolts are the top of the ceramic heating elements that run at (depending on the zone, there's a dozen of so elements in the oven) anywhere from 350C - 460C (662F - 860F) The metal bars carry enough amperage to kill you when it's on.

Amusing that you had so much excess capacity that it wasn't worth trying to troubleshoot for a decade ;x That's a pricey piece of hardware to sit dormant.

Weird, I've never heard of a mouse going after wrapped chocolate. Sure someone a decade ago didn't want to soften their candies a bit?


In one of my first IT jobs, I was trouble shooting a laser printer that came in from a grain silo. The first test print was coated in a tar-like reddish brown substance.
When I opened the printer, I found that a mouse got caught inside and was run through the fuser.

To get where they are, you have to pop open the hood, remove a giant metal shroud, then remove the giant other metal shroud with the insulation attached to it, then drop the roof of the chamber out, it's a good 30 minute process. =p

was the chocolate still good?

If you look the the bottom most kiss in the picture, the black blot is the shrunken petrified remains.
