It would take an economist to develop such an interesting prisoners dilemma. If not enough people populate no one gets the prize, if too many populate then the odds of winning get severely reduced. The expected result would be that both servers are fully populated, even though this is not the maximizing solution (servers only populated at the baseline for the contest).
The only question I have is if you have addressed the free rider problem? |

I <3 Game Theory, but this is a contest, not a public good, the free rider problem only really exists where someone derives a benefit but does not contribute. I suppose you could sit idle in spectator, but the servers are set to boot you anyway after X amount of time. So any free riding would be at most minimal. X = minutes you are able to 'idle' before auto-boot p = probability of me checking while you are idling C = cost of idling (social cost of your peers seeing you in spec for a long period) D = Opportunity cost - using your PC for something else, or actually playing instead of idling y = probability of winning with that one ticket Z = Prize Value pX - C - D >= yZ Don't make me break out the calculus </nerd> Edit: Forgot opportunity cost of using your PC for something else or playing the game  Sig by Joel |

I meant people joining when it hits 19 just to get their name logged then leaving. Maybe I shouldn't be giving people ideas.
Edit: NM if you are checking at random these "freeriders" would have almost zero chance of getting a ticket. You have to be on for an extended period to maximize your chances and all night for a guaranteed ticket. Someone call Willy Wonka.
