TF2 Crashes on startup

When I try to start up the game it crashes and says that hl2.exe has stopped working.  Does anyone know how to fix this? Also, Is this a common problem?

Edit 2-Sadly, this did not fix the problem.

You could try verifying the game files. I think you just right click the game, click properties, and verify game integrity? You could also try a complete reinstall of the game.

hmm. i don't know exactly why this worked but i moved the tf folder in steamapps to the hl2 folder. anyways, I am able to play again. thanks.
