Also as an example, when you are leaving text idler on to see what you have coming to you use TF2 Items.net
Here's my backpack as an example, at the bottom it says 'Items Yet to be put in your backpack' You can check this to see whats in your pipeline  Sig by Joel |

Every time a player plays for 25 minutes the game randomly draws a decision for the player. If the player is lucky (25% per item chance) then they will get a randomly chosen weapon or item. If the player is unlucky, then they receive no item that time. There is a separate timer that counts every 15,430 seconds (4 hours, 17 minutes, and 10 seconds) you have a 1 in 28 chance of receiving a hat.

Finally got an item from idling; a sandvich. I finally have enough refined metal to craft a hat.
Now, when to do it... |

You'll need to make a config to join the server, just make a new config and put in connect 68.232.174.110:27015 Name it like idle.cfg or something, and put it w/ rest of your config files, then add +exec idle.cfg to the commandline as well. Poof. |

So wait, how does this work? Instead of fully launching tf2 it just connects my client to a server?

It launches TF2, but there's no graphics, just the console window, think of it like the difference between the DOS Prompt and Windows. It eats a lot less CPU and RAM, and you can still get items  Sig by Joel |

Just to clarify though, idling as a spectator(who doesn't even get past the chalkboard) is still the same thing? Or are you required to join a team?
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. -Albert Einstein |

idling as spectator works, however you won't receive the notifcation that you've found a weapon until you join a team and die a few times. That's why you occasionally see people who join a server, die, and spam server chat with "Player has found j; Player has found k; Player has found l; Player has found m; Player has found n" etc etc ad infinitum
